At the 97th Academy Awards on March 2, 2025, RAYE sang “Skyfall” as the final number in a four-part James Bond tribute. “Skyfall” is the theme song from the 2012 James Bond film of the same name, originally performed by Adele. Adele was scheduled to sing it at the 2013 Oscars, where it was nominated for Best Original Song, according to CBS News.
Why singing “Skyfall” was described as terrifying
March 2025 coverage attributed the word “terrifying” to RAYE discussing her reaction after the show. Yahoo Entertainment’s syndicated report framed taking on an Adele song as especially daunting, while NME also described RAYE as nervous and used the word in its coverage. The original post-show interview transcript is not available in these reports, so the characterization is best understood as reported coverage rather than a fully verified quotation in context.

The circumstances help explain why the song carried weight: RAYE was interpreting a well-known Bond theme associated with Adele’s original performance, on an occasion devoted to the franchise. That is context, not a claim about RAYE’s private thoughts beyond what the reporting establishes. The word “terrifyingly” also appears in a separate statement Adele made before singing at the 2013 ceremony; it described Adele’s own experience, not RAYE’s.

What RAYE said about the performance later
In a British Vogue profile published September 17, 2025, RAYE reflected on the performance with more detail. She felt she had done okay, but not perfectly. In particular, she questioned using chest voice on the final note, saying she should have gone softer and let the ending crescendo. She also thought she had done too much with her hand. The profile says that reading online comments afterward left her deeply hurt.
