What happens in “L.A. Story”?

The premise gives the episode two complementary jobs. Does the road trip keep the story moving?
The Los Angeles detour gives the episode a change of setting, but its larger value is structural: it creates room for a separate thread while the Maine story gains another participant. CBR reviewer Joshua M. Patton characterizes the trip as a diversion and Neagley’s arrival as drawing her into the inner circle as the season nears its endgame. That trade-off shapes the pacing. Viewers looking for a major standalone payoff may find the episode more focused on positioning people and plots than resolving the season’s central conflict. For a season building toward a larger confrontation, however, gathering the team and advancing a parallel mission can be useful momentum rather than a detour from the whole story.
