That account comes from unnamed friends of William and Catherine quoted by The Daily Beast in an August 20, 2024 report; neither William nor Catherine has publicly confirmed it.
What reportedly prompted the offense
The Daily Beast pointed to a public message Harry and Meghan sent after Catherine announced her cancer diagnosis in March 2024: “We wish health and healing for Kate and the family, and hope they are able to do so privately and in peace.” An unnamed friend told the outlet that the choice of “Kate” was noticed.
The source said William takes offense when people call his wife Kate because she has asked to be known as Catherine. Another unnamed friend characterized the use of that name in the message as “an entirely unnecessary and deliberate irritation.” These are the sources’ descriptions of William’s reaction and the name choice—not statements from William himself.
Why the name “Catherine” matters in the account
The report says Catherine was widely known as Kate at school and university, but deliberately switched to using her full name shortly before marrying William. It says she introduces herself as Catherine, and that William, friends and family use that name in private. At the same time, “Kate” and “Kate Middleton” remain familiar forms in public and media coverage, including in the United States.

That contrast is central to the reported dispute: a name that remains common in headlines and popular usage may not be the name Catherine prefers. The Daily Beast’s source called deliberately using a name someone does not like “just bloody rude.”
What is known—and what remains unconfirmed
The offense claim is attributed to unnamed friends of William and Catherine, not to a named source speaking on William’s behalf. The Daily Beast reported that the offices of both the Waleses and the Sussexes did not respond to its request for comment. The report does not establish that Harry and Meghan intended to irritate William, nor does it say the naming issue accounts for all of the brothers’ conflict.

Harry’s memoir Spare is mentioned in the report as context: it says he generally referred to Catherine as Kate, with one exception in a recollection involving King Charles calling her Catherine. That detail does not independently verify William’s private reaction.
Marie Claire summarized the Daily Beast story the following day, attributing the offense claim to a source close to the Waleses. It is a secondary account of the same underlying report, not separate confirmation.
