David Kenner pleaded guilty because he disclosed grand jury information and other protected evidence to Bloomberg News reporters while representing Fugees rapper Pras Michel. The disclosures violated a court order limiting the material’s use to court proceedings. Kenner was sentenced to one year of unsupervised probation and a $5,000 fine—not jail time.
What did David Kenner disclose?
Kenner, a California-based lawyer who represented Michel, shared grand jury information and photographs with two Bloomberg News reporters. The material was used in stories published shortly before Michel’s Washington trial, according to the Associated Press.
The Washington Post described the material as including grand jury witness testimony, investigative reports, communications, and a photograph of Michel at a 2012 fundraising dinner bearing a grand jury exhibit sticker. A protective order restricted the materials’ use to court proceedings.
Kenner acknowledged responsibility in court. The AP quoted him as saying, “Obviously, I made a terrible mistake.” The Post reported his statement that “I was reckless in not taking steps to ensure the reporters’ access to the database was terminated.”

What sentence did Michel’s lawyer receive?
On January 26, 2024, Kenner pleaded guilty to misdemeanor criminal contempt of court. The AP reported that the count carried a maximum prison sentence of six months. Under the plea agreement, Judge Amit Mehta imposed one year of unsupervised probation and a $5,000 fine; the judge concluded that prison or home detention was not warranted, according to the AP.
How was Kenner’s case different from Pras Michel’s?
They were separate legal matters: Kenner’s contempt case concerned violating the protective order, while Michel’s federal prosecution concerned foreign influence and campaign-finance conduct. Kenner’s plea did not resolve Michel’s charges.

The Justice Department said Michel’s 2023 jury conviction included counts involving conspiracy, concealment of material facts, false entries in records, witness tampering, and acting as an unregistered agent of a foreign power. The department’s account described alleged efforts to influence the U.S. government and funnel foreign money into the 2012 presidential election.
