Poonam Saxena translated Dharamvir Bharati’s 1949 Hindi novel Gunahon Ka Devta because, she says, its love story stayed with her—and because its world offered English-language readers more than romance. Published in English as Chander & Sudha by Penguin Viking, the novel also examines how social expectations and duty can shape relationships, especially women’s lives.

Why did Saxena think the novel was worth translating?

In a 2015 first-person essay for Scroll.in, journalist and translator Poonam Saxena recounts that she first read the novel years earlier, then returned to it. Its characters, setting and period remained with her. Her explanation is personal testimony: she describes the book’s emotional effect on her, rather than claiming every reader will respond the same way.

She calls the relationship between Chander and Sudha playful, deep and powerful. But she also argues that the novel’s importance reaches beyond an affecting love story. As Saxena writes: “I found Gunahon ka Devta not only an unforgettable love story but also a sharp, telling look at the restrictive social norms of the time and how they affected middle class relationships, particularly women’s lives.”

How do love and social duty collide in the story?

Bharati wrote Gunahon Ka Devta in 1949, when he was 23, and set it in 1940s Allahabad, according to Saxena. Chander is a university student; Sudha is the daughter of his professor and mentor. When Sudha’s father decides she should marry, Chander persuades her to accept the match, acting out of duty and gratitude to her father. Saxena describes the consequences as painful and devastating.

That conflict is central to Saxena’s case for the novel: private feeling runs up against expectations about family, obligation and conformity. She reads the story as a record of the costs those norms could impose on middle-class relationships, particularly on women whose wishes might be set aside.

What does the novel’s historical distance add?

Communication makes separation feel different

The characters have no telephone or social media. Letters and the difficulty of visiting shape how they experience distance. Saxena suggests that this can make parting feel final in a way that modern readers may find hard to imagine. That is her comparison between the novel’s world and contemporary life, not a claim about how all readers will experience it.

Allahabad is part of the emotional world

Saxena recalls the novel’s walks in Alfred Park—now Chandra Shekhar Azad Park—along with boating on the Ganga, poetry, radio and the changing seasons. These details give the story a particular place and period; its setting is not simply a backdrop to the relationship.

Why is it more than “adolescent love”?

Saxena challenges the tendency to dismiss the book as only “adolescent love.” In her view, its popularity among young readers may have helped lead to its being treated as popular fiction, at a distance from Bharati’s more critically acclaimed work. She also points to friendship, idealization, constancy, confusion and the place of sex in idealistic love. The novel’s continuing question, as she frames it, is whether readers still want to believe in a love that persists.

What English-language readers can take from the translation

The English edition, Chander & Sudha, gives readers access to a story rooted in a specific time and place, while bringing its tensions—love versus duty, personal desire versus social expectation—into view. Saxena’s reason for translating it was not to make the novel’s customs feel contemporary, but to let English-language readers encounter both its emotional force and the constraints that shape its characters.
