Peter Jackson said the films gave Arwen more screen time so her relationship with Aragorn would register on screen. Why Arwen needed more room in the films
In a 2002 interview, director and co-writer Peter Jackson said Arwen has a small part in Tolkien’s book but an important role in the story. The filmmakers wanted to give her and Aragorn’s romance enough screen time to work as a film storyline, without making her a constant presence. Jackson characterized the change as slight, “not a huge amount,” and said it was not for commercial reasons. That is his stated explanation, rather than independent proof of every production motive. Why Arwen takes Glorfindel’s rescue role
The expansion was also a matter of adaptation and pacing. In the novel, Glorfindel helps rescue Frodo; the film gives that function to Arwen. Jackson explained in the Fellowship of the Ring commentary that introducing Glorfindel for one scene, then introducing Arwen at Rivendell, would mean one character introduction immediately followed by another. The filmmakers condensed characters and gave Arwen more to do. This is distinct from the romance: one change emphasizes an existing relationship, while the other combines character functions. The early action-heavy idea did not become the final Arwen
Liv Tyler later recalled an earlier conception in which Arwen would take on more action, including fighting at Helm’s Deep. Tyler said the approach did not work for her or the filmmakers, and described the subsequent direction as bringing the character closer to her book characterization. What “expanded” means here
Arwen’s larger film role is not one single alteration with one explanation. Jackson’s account points to two released-film choices: screen time for the Aragorn–Arwen relationship, and the reassignment of Glorfindel’s rescue function to avoid another short-lived introduction. Tyler’s account concerns an earlier action-oriented idea that was abandoned. The available accounts support these attributed explanations, not a precise screen-time or page-count comparison.
