No—the Hollywood Sign did not burn in the January 2025 Los Angeles fires. The viral images and video showing it engulfed or surrounded by flames were false. The Hollywood Sign Trust said the landmark was safe, and photographs taken at the time showed it intact. Some images displayed clear signs of AI generation; a separate video was judged likely synthetic, though its exact origin was not established.
What happened during the January 2025 fires?
On January 8, 2025, a social-media post claimed “Hollywood sign is on Fire.” Versions of the claim spread across X, Instagram and Facebook as wildfires burned in the Los Angeles area. The alarm was understandable: a nearby fire was real, even though the landmark itself was not burning.
On January 9, AFP photographed the Sign intact. Jeff Zarrinnam, chair of the Hollywood Sign Trust, told AFP it was “not affected and is secure.” The Trust also said the Sign was undamaged as of 3 p.m. that day, according to PolitiFact’s contemporaneous fact-check. Associated Press photographs from January 9 likewise showed it standing. The nearby Sunset Fire was real and fully contained by January 9; that historical update should not be mistaken for current fire guidance.
The distinction matters: a fabricated image of a landmark does not mean the emergency around it was fabricated. Reporting on the January fires documented both false disaster imagery and real fires affecting the region.

Why the viral images looked fake
Fact-checkers and media-forensics experts identified several inconsistencies in images and clips circulating as evidence that the Sign was burning. AFP reported that Hany Farid, a media-forensics expert and GetReal Labs co-founder, noticed differences in letter shapes and nearby structures. Siwei Lyu, director of the University at Buffalo Media Forensic Lab, pointed to misshapen or misaligned support brackets and towers missing from the background in a video.
- Lettering: One image added an extra “d” to “Hollywood,” while other examples showed distorted letter shapes.
- Structure: Supports and background towers did not match the real landmark.
- Watermark and admission: One image carried a Grok watermark, and its apparent first poster later said it was AI-created.
AFP reported that Lyu’s detection algorithms indicated the visuals were likely made with text-to-image systems such as Midjourney, Runway or Grok. That is an expert assessment of the visuals, not proof that every circulating version came from one specific tool. AFP’s report details the visual clues and expert assessments.

In a separate image check, Full Fact found a Grok watermark on the uncropped version and prompted Grok to generate a depiction of the Hollywood Sign on fire, receiving similar-looking images. The Trust posted on Instagram on January 9: “The Hollywood Sign continues to stand tall!” See Full Fact’s image analysis.
What about the video of flames around the Sign?
The video is a separate claim from the still images, and its provenance is less conclusive. Full Fact followed a TikTok handle visible in the video’s watermark to a deleted TikTok post dated January 9 and a YouTube upload from the same day. The YouTube video had 240,000 views when Full Fact checked it; that is the view count for that upload at that time, not the total reach of the claim.

Full Fact found no credible reports that the Sign or its immediate vicinity had caught fire and assessed the footage as likely CGI or AI, based on its appearance and the account’s other content. The account had not responded to Full Fact’s inquiry by publication, so the precise origin and creation process were not confirmed. No single clue can reliably classify every synthetic image. A watermark or visual oddity is useful evidence, but the stronger approach is to combine provenance, visual comparison and independent corroboration.

- Find the earliest available upload. Look for the original account, date, caption and any creator statement rather than relying on a repost. A traceable origin can clarify what the publisher claimed, though it does not by itself prove the image is genuine.
- Compare fixed details. Check letter shapes, support brackets and nearby towers against reliable photographs of the landmark. In this case, those structural details helped expose inconsistencies.
- Inspect the full image or clip. Cropping can remove a watermark or other context. Look for misspellings, distorted structures and signs that differ from the real scene.
- Seek independent confirmation. Compare the claim with dated photographs, statements from the responsible organization and credible reporting about the fire itself. Agreement among independent sources is stronger than a single visual clue or an AI-detector result.
- Keep the emergency context separate. Verify whether a nearby fire is real without treating a false image as evidence that a particular landmark burned—or treating a fake image as proof that no emergency existed.
Full Fact’s retrospective overview of LA wildfire misinformation describes probable AI-generated content and miscaptioned material as recurring patterns during the fires. The Hollywood Sign claim shows how a plausible-looking synthetic image can spread amid a genuine emergency.
