Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel’s breakup did not come down to one documented blowup. Simon described a difficult recording experience, separate lives and ambitions, and a desire to make music beyond the duo’s familiar sound. Garfunkel later characterized their bond as intense and cyclical. Their story includes real friction, but also later collaborations and reunions—so “all-out feud” misses much of what happened.
Why did Simon and Garfunkel break up?
The clearest contemporaneous explanation comes from Simon. In a 1972 Rolling Stone interview, he called the split a “natural drifting apart” as they grew older and their lives became more individual. He said Garfunkel’s acting career was taking him in another direction, while Simon wanted to make a solo album. Simon also described the relationship at the time as “Cautious. That account is Simon’s perspective, not a jointly agreed explanation. The official Simon & Garfunkel biography likewise points to diverging ambitions and says the shared creative experience had become strained and self-conscious. Taken together, the accounts suggest an accumulation of pressures rather than a single decisive quarrel.
How did Bridge Over Troubled Water add strain?
Simon said making Bridge Over Troubled Water was complex, difficult and often unpleasant. The album’s success also raised the pressure of what the pair should do next. In the 1972 interview, Simon described Garfunkel’s plans to act in Carnal Knowledge and his own intention to make a solo record. Their professional paths were diverging at a moment when the duo faced expectations for a follow-up to a landmark album.

Garfunkel’s acting work was therefore part of the timing, but the available accounts do not support treating it as the sole cause. Simon also spoke of separate interests and the strain of maintaining the partnership.
Did they have different ideas about their creative roles?
Simon said the songwriting arrangement was not an equal partnership: he wrote and shaped the songs, while performance and recording decisions involved Garfunkel, other musicians and producer Roy Halee. That is Simon’s description of how the work was divided; it should not be mistaken for an uncontested judgment about Garfunkel’s contribution as a performer or collaborator.

Simon later said that working without the duo gave him greater freedom and let him write more rhythm-oriented songs. His official site identifies “Mother and Child Reunion” and “Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard” as his first songs after the split. That creative freedom helps explain why continuing as Simon & Garfunkel may have felt limiting to him, even apart from personal tensions. See Simon’s official biography.
Was it really an “all-out feud”?
There was visible friction after the breakup. A 1975 interview reproduced by The Guardian describes the pair trading hostile-sounding jokes on television. But the same account records joint appearances and their work recording “My Little Town.” Their post-split relationship was not a clean break from all collaboration. Read the 1975 interview.

They also reunited for later performances, including the 1981 Central Park concert, documented in their official biography. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame lists Simon and Garfunkel as inductees in 1990. In a 2017 CBS News interview, Garfunkel described the relationship as changeable: “It has summers and winters. It waxes and wanes, it is best not talked about. You leave it alone.” The image suggests a bond that could be intense and difficult without being permanently hostile.
