The Jonas Brothers said their 2013 breakup came from several problems building at once: their music was not connecting as they hoped, shows were not selling, and their relationship as brothers had become strained. Nick Jonas raised the idea of ending the band, but the decision followed accumulated commercial, creative and personal pressure—not one confirmed secret incident.
Why did the Jonas Brothers break up?
In a 2019 interview with CBS News, Nick Jonas rejected “creative differences” as a complete explanation. He described a combination of declining audience appetite, unsold shows, music the brothers were not proud of or that was not connecting, and a relationship that was becoming strained.
His account links three kinds of pressure. Weak audience response made the band’s direction harder to sustain; the brothers were dissatisfied with the music and how it landed; and tension between them made it harder to address those problems as a family and as a group. Their explanation was cumulative, rather than a single cause.
What role did Nick play in the decision?
Nick said he initiated a difficult conversation with his brothers, telling them, “I feel like the Jonas Brothers should be no more and we should go on individual journeys.” That makes him the person who raised ending the group in his account, not evidence that he alone made the decision. The brothers publicly described the split as a collective choice.

Joe Jonas later recalled how final it felt to him at the time: “I checked out in my mind that that was it. There’s gonna be no more brothers, ever.” Nick said he feared his brothers might never speak to him again. He described months of difficult conversations before they could reconnect as family. These reflections appear in the CBS interview and its related CBS press release.
How the split unfolded in 2013
The public breakup followed a period of uncertainty about the band’s future. CBS reported that the brothers met to discuss their concerns on October 3, 2013. On October 9, the group cancelled its fall tour, which was due to begin two days later, amid reports of a deep rift and disagreement about musical direction. The split was confirmed publicly on October 29.

In that contemporaneous CBS report, Kevin Jonas called the breakup “over for now,” Nick said it was difficult to say “forever,” and Joe described the decision as unanimous. The timeline helps distinguish what the brothers said at the time from the more detailed explanation Nick gave years later.
Was there a hidden reason for the breakup?
The accounts cited here do not establish a secret cause. In 2013, the Los Angeles Times summarized the brothers’ public explanation as putting family first and disagreeing about music. Nick’s later account added detail about ticket sales, audience connection and strained relationships, but it still described connected pressures rather than a hidden scandal.
How did making the documentary lead to a reunion?
The documentary Chasing Happiness began as a way for the brothers to tell their story and find closure, not as a reunion plan. In a 2019 CBS interview and a Guardian interview, they described how making the film got them talking again and eventually playing music together. Joe said, “We definitely didn’t think we were going to get back together.” The process that reopened their communication was therefore a consequence of revisiting the breakup, not evidence that the original split had been a planned pause.

The Guardian reported in 2019 that the Jonas Brothers had sold 17 million albums by the time of the 2013 split. That figure is the newspaper’s reported total; the cited interview does not provide an underlying sales dataset or methodology.
