Smith said she was moved to be mentioned in Thomas’s company.
What Taylor Swift said about Patti Smith
In the title track of The Tortured Poets Department, Swift refers to both Patti Smith and Dylan Thomas. Smith responded in an Instagram post, thanking Swift for the mention. ABC News reported the post on April 22, 2024, and ANSA covered her response on April 20, 2024: ABC News and ANSA.
What Patti Smith wrote in her response
ABC News reproduced Smith’s Instagram caption: “This is / saying I was / moved to be / mentioned in / the company of the great / Welsh poet / Dylan Thomas,” followed by “Thank you Taylor.” The words were Smith’s response to being named in the song, not a statement from Swift or her record label.
The Dylan Thomas connection—and the book in the photo
Smith’s caption specifically highlighted being mentioned alongside Dylan Thomas, the Welsh poet. The photograph accompanying her post showed her holding Thomas’s Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog, as ABC News reported. That makes the book a direct detail from the post, rather than a title inferred from the song.

Smith’s later comment about readers discovering Thomas

A little context on Patti Smith
For readers who know Smith through the Swift reference, TIME identifies Horses as Smith’s 1975 debut album. It offers a starting point for exploring her own music, distinct from the Dylan Thomas book pictured in her post.
