Patti LuPone apologized on May 31, 2025, after remarks about Kecia Lewis and Audra McDonald in a New Yorker profile drew public criticism and a Broadway community open letter. The dispute began earlier, with a complaint about sound between neighboring Broadway productions; the apology addressed LuPone’s later comments, not a confirmed private reconciliation.
How the dispute began
In 2024, LuPone was performing in The Roommate at the Booth Theatre, next to Hell’s Kitchen. The Los Angeles Times reported that LuPone complained to the theatre owner about sound from the musical. Kecia Lewis, a performer in Hell’s Kitchen, objected publicly, characterizing the complaint as bullying and racially microaggressive.
Audra McDonald showed support for Lewis’s Instagram post. That support became part of the later public disagreement, but it does not by itself establish the nature of any private relationship between McDonald and LuPone.
What LuPone said about McDonald and Lewis
A May 2025 New Yorker profile brought the dispute back into view. LuPone described McDonald as “not a friend” and made a demeaning remark about Lewis. The profile is the source for those remarks; the Los Angeles Times also reported on them.

Asked about LuPone’s characterization, McDonald told Gayle King that she did not know what rift LuPone meant and had not seen her in about 11 years. As the CBS News coverage reported, McDonald said, “If there’s a rift between us, I don’t know what it is.” That is McDonald’s account of the situation, not proof that there had never been tension.
Why the Broadway community letter mattered
On May 30, 2025, a Broadway community open letter condemned LuPone’s comments and called for accountability. The Los Angeles Times reported that more than 500 actors signed it. The letter broadened the reaction beyond a disagreement among individual performers, placing the remarks in the context of pressures facing theatre and artists.

The apology established that LuPone accepted responsibility publicly and hoped to speak with Lewis and McDonald. The reporting cited here does not confirm whether those conversations took place or whether the performers later reconciled privately. It is therefore more accurate to describe a public apology and unresolved private contact than to present the episode as a settled personal feud.
