McAfee shared the news on his show the next day. A Wyatt Sicks segment that included a package addressed to McAfee made the absence look potentially connected to the storyline, but the reported reason was a family emergency.
What happened to Pat McAfee’s father-in-law?
McAfee said Ludy had been hospitalized with an infection. The family had been told on the Friday before Raw that Ludy was improving and might soon be discharged. His condition then worsened, and McAfee’s wife contacted him on Monday with news of an emergency. Ludy died unexpectedly, according to contemporaneous reports of McAfee’s account. PWTorch reported the disclosure and preceding illness; ProWrestling.net named Ludy and summarized McAfee’s account.
Why did viewers wonder if the absence was part of the Wyatt Sicks story?
On the June 24 Raw, a segment featured a package addressed to McAfee, creating an apparent connection to the Wyatt Sicks storyline. Contemporary coverage said he may have been intended to receive it, while Michael Cole cautioned viewers not to read too much into McAfee’s absence. The family emergency became the reported explanation after McAfee disclosed the death. PWTorch’s Raw report and The Sporting News’ Wyatt Sicks coverage provide the storyline context.
When did McAfee explain his absence?
The sequence was brief: the family received encouraging news about Ludy on Friday; McAfee missed Raw on Monday, June 24, after his wife contacted him about the emergency; and on Tuesday, June 25, he discussed Ludy’s death on his show after family members had been notified. McAfee’s public message included, “Tell your people you love them,” as reproduced in ProWrestling.net’s June 25 report. This was McAfee’s message, not a WWE statement.
