A high-bitrate video can add playback and rendering work while OBS is streaming, but its bitrate alone does not prove why frames are being missed. First check which OBS statistic is rising: rendering lag, encoding lag, and network dropped frames point to different problems and need different fixes.
What “skipped frames” can mean in OBS
OBS has to composite and render a scene using GPU resources. Playing a demanding video source at the same time can coincide with resource pressure, but the available OBS guidance does not establish a file-bitrate threshold—or file bitrate by itself—as the cause of missed frames. Start with the OBS statistics or log category rather than changing settings at random.
| What you see | What it points to | First response |
|---|---|---|
| Rendering lag or missed frames due to rendering lag | OBS may not have enough GPU time or resources to composite and render the scene. | Reduce GPU workload and scene complexity; if needed, lower output resolution or frame rate. |
| Encoding lag or encoder overload | The encoding stage cannot keep up with the selected settings and available system resources. | Reduce encoder or output load using settings appropriate to your encoder and system. |
| Dropped frames (network) | The connection to the streaming server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured stream bitrate. | Check connection stability and whether the connection can sustain the configured bitrate. |
| Viewers report buffering, but OBS shows no dropped frames | The viewer’s playback conditions may differ from the streamer’s; their device or connection may be responsible. | Compare the report with OBS statistics and consider platform recommendations for reaching viewers with varied connections. |
OBS explains that it needs GPU time and resources to composite and render a scene in its Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide. The counter matters: network drops are not the same symptom as rendering or encoding lag.
How to identify the stage that is falling behind
- Check OBS statistics while the problem is happening. Note whether rendering lag, encoding lag, or network dropped frames are increasing. Do not infer a network problem from a viewer’s buffering report alone.
- Review the OBS log for warnings. Match the warning or counter to the relevant stage before changing a setting. If you need help interpreting it, use the OBS Help Portal.
- Repeat a short, controlled test. Keep the scene and stream settings unchanged, then compare behavior with the demanding file stopped and playing. This can show whether the playback workload coincides with the issue; it does not, by itself, identify a specific component or prove file bitrate is the cause.
- Record the conditions. Note the file and source, output resolution and frame rate, encoder and settings, system details, connection type, and which statistic rose. A clean log and these details make diagnosis more useful than a guessed hardware fix.
Fix rendering lag by reducing scene and GPU workload
If rendering lag is the counter rising, focus on the work OBS must render and on other GPU activity.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Close or reduce other GPU-intensive work while streaming.
- Simplify the scene where practical, especially unnecessary layers or effects.
- If the problem continues, try a lower stream output resolution or frame rate and check whether rendering lag falls.
- On Windows, OBS’s performance guide recommends running OBS as administrator as an initial GPU-overload troubleshooting step.
Make one change at a time and recheck the same counter. The cited guidance does not establish a universal PC component, file codec, bitrate cutoff, or hardware upgrade that fixes rendering lag in every setup.
Fix encoding lag without guessing at a preset
If OBS reports encoding lag or encoder overload, the problem is at the encoding stage, not necessarily in video playback or network delivery. Reduce encoder or output load using the advice in OBS’s encoding performance guide. The best adjustment depends on which encoder and system you use; there is no universally supported preset or hardware change to prescribe from the symptom alone.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
After adjusting an output or encoder setting, test again and check whether encoding lag stops increasing. Avoid changing several settings at once: doing so makes it harder to tell which change helped.
Fix network dropped frames by checking stability and bitrate capacity
OBS describes network dropped frames as a connection problem between your computer and the streaming server, either because the connection is unstable or because it cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Follow OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guidance and check both the stability of the connection and the bitrate you set for the stream.

OBS describes dynamic bitrate as a way to lower bitrate during network congestion, not as a root-cause fix. The trade-off is lower video quality while the bitrate is reduced. Do not apply it as a fix for rendering or encoding lag: those are different stages.
When viewers see buffering but OBS does not show drops
A viewer’s buffering does not necessarily mean OBS is dropping frames. Viewers have different devices and internet connections, so one person’s playback problem may not appear in the streamer’s statistics. OBS’s Stream Buffering Troubleshooting guide discusses this distinction and recommends considering platform guidance when trying to reach a broad audience.

Common troubleshooting mistakes
- Blaming file bitrate without checking OBS: there is no established file-bitrate threshold in the cited guidance. Identify the rising counter first.
- Treating every kind of lag as an internet issue: rendering, encoding, and network delivery are separate stages. Match the fix to the evidence.
- Buying hardware before finding the bottleneck: the symptom alone does not identify a GPU, CPU, network adapter, router, or storage device as the cause.
- Using dynamic bitrate as a cure for every problem: it is a network-congestion mitigation with a quality trade-off, not a rendering or encoding fix.
- Assuming viewer buffering proves the stream is dropping frames: compare the viewer report with OBS’s own dropped-frame data.
Or let it run in the cloud
