Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf OBS shows black when you stream a prerecorded file, first check the scene and the file’s Media Source: confirm the right scene is active, the source is visible and unobscured, its position and crop leave the picture on the canvas, and the file is playing. Then compare the OBS preview, a local recording, and YouTube’s live preview to find where the picture disappears. That tells you whether to troubleshoot OBS or the stream’s delivery to YouTube.
Start with the right source for a local video
For a video file saved on your computer, use OBS’s Media Source. The OBS Project’s Sources Guide describes it this way: “Media Sources Add audio/video files to a scene.” A capture source is for a different job: capturing a display, application or game window, or video device.
| Source path | Use it for | First checks |
|---|---|---|
| Media Source | A prerecorded local video or audio file | File selection and playback; visibility; source order; position and crop |
| Display, Window, Game, or Video Capture | A screen, application or game window, or external video device | Correct capture source and target; on some multi-GPU laptops, GPU assignment may matter |
If your goal is to show the prerecorded file itself, start with Media Source rather than adding a capture card or capturing a media-player window. Each route has different potential failure points.
Check the OBS scene and Media Source
1. Confirm the scene being sent
Look at the OBS preview and confirm that the selected scene is the scene you intend to stream. If the preview is black, solve that locally before investigating YouTube. A different scene may be active, or the scene may not contain the expected Media Source.

Please note that you need to restart the OBS Studio software after the audio setup is complete, otherwise it will result in no sound output. When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
2. Confirm the file is selected and playing
Open the Media Source’s properties and check that it points to the intended file. Make sure the source is active and the video is advancing. If you hear the file’s audio but see no picture, that narrows the problem to the visual source or rendering path; it does not identify a specific cause by itself. Check the file and OBS log before concluding that a codec is incompatible.
3. Check visibility and source order
In the Sources list, make sure the Media Source’s eye control is enabled. Then inspect the sources above it: OBS layers higher in the list appear on top and can cover lower sources. Temporarily hide an overlapping source if you need to test whether it is blocking the video.

4. Check position, size, and crop
Select the Media Source and inspect its bounding box in the canvas. It may be outside the visible area, too small, or cropped so the useful part of the frame is gone. Reset or adjust its transform and crop until the picture sits within the canvas. OBS documents these source-order, visibility, transform, and crop controls in its Sources Guide.
Find where the picture disappears
Compare three views: the OBS preview, a short local recording made by OBS, and the YouTube live preview. This is a practical way to separate a scene or encoding problem from a delivery problem; YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance likewise recommends checking the encoder output and a local archive.

- OBS preview is black: Focus on the scene, Media Source, file playback, visibility, layering, and transform.
- OBS preview looks right but the local recording is black: Investigate OBS’s output or encoding path. The picture has not yet been shown to be healthy outside the preview.
- Preview and local recording look right, but YouTube is black: Check the encoder’s outgoing stream, YouTube Live Control Room for encoder errors, system load, and the outbound connection.
If OBS is right but YouTube is not
YouTube Help’s “Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream” guide says: “Check the look and sound of your stream directly in the encoder.” Use this order:
- Inspect the encoder output. Confirm that the picture and sound are present in OBS while streaming, not just in the scene preview.
- Review YouTube’s live dashboard. Look for reported encoder errors and check whether YouTube is receiving the stream as expected.
- Check system load. Review CPU usage and whether OBS is reporting encoding problems. A local recording and the encoder’s stream output help distinguish a local output issue from a YouTube delivery issue.
- Test the outbound connection. If the encoder output is healthy, check the strength and stability of the Internet connection sending the stream.
- Use a new stream key only for the relevant error. YouTube suggests trying a new stream key when a third-party encoder reports an error starting. It is not a universal fix for a black picture.
Also confirm that the encoder software is current, as YouTube recommends. Avoid changing unrelated OBS settings until these checks identify which stage is failing.

When GPU assignment may matter
GPU reassignment is not a general fix for a black Media Source. OBS’s laptop troubleshooting guide, last modified in 2019, discusses GPU choice for particular capture methods: Display Capture may call for OBS to use the integrated GPU, while Game or Window Capture on a multi-GPU laptop may call for the discrete GPU. The guide also discusses browser-source rendering. Those cases do not establish that changing GPU assignment will repair local-file playback, and its interface directions may not match current systems.
Common dead ends to avoid
- Buying a capture card for a local file: A capture card is for capturing a video device; a local file belongs in a Media Source. The reviewed OBS and YouTube guidance does not recommend a purchase as the standard fix.
- Replacing the stream key before checking OBS: A key change is suggested by YouTube for a third-party encoder’s error starting, not for every black-screen symptom.
- Assuming a codec problem from a black preview alone: Check the selected file and OBS log first; the symptom alone does not establish codec incompatibility.
- Changing GPU settings for every setup: The cited OBS guidance concerns specific capture and browser-source scenarios, not a universal Media Source remedy.
