Nikkhil Advani says his teenage fascination with Larry Collins and Dominique Lapierre’s Freedom at Midnight helped draw him to adapt it: the book struck him as an engrossing read that “felt like a screenplay.” He was also drawn to the scale and human cost of the period, which he called “absolutely incredible times.” For Advani, the phrase signals political upheaval and consequential choices—not that Partition was anything other than a horrible tragedy.

What drew Advani to the book?

In a Filmfare interview published January 4, 2025, Advani recalled reading the book as a teenager. Its narrative energy made him wonder why nobody had adapted it. He explained: “A lot of books have been written on India’s freedom that are probably better. But for a young teenage boy, it was an incredible read. It felt like a screenplay. I wondered why no one had made anything on this. The show is from the perspective of India. India is telling what happened to her.”

That memory offers a direct answer to why he pursued the project: the book had stayed with him, and he could imagine its events translated into screen drama. In a Scroll interview, he described the era as “absolutely incredible times.” The words convey his fascination with a period of extraordinary change; they should be read alongside his emphasis on Partition’s suffering, not as a description of it as admirable or uncomplicated.

Why tell the story from India’s perspective?

Advani has said that the series tells the story from India’s perspective. He also connected the project to his concern that patriotism had become corrupted, arguing that ordinary work to support one’s family can itself be patriotic. These are the filmmaker’s stated framing and motivations, rather than a guarantee that the drama represents every perspective or settles disputes about the past.

Advani has also acknowledged that viewers may bring opposing interpretations. In a Hindustan Times interview published November 22, 2024, he said: “When you are making something like Freedom At Midnight, there will be opposing points of view,” He described the series as spanning August 16, 1946, to January 30, 1948, and said the team sought to follow events and take viewers into the rooms where decisions were made.

He has spoken about Partition as a human tragedy and recalled stories from his grandparents as part of his own family connection to the period. That personal connection helps explain the emotional stakes he brings to the adaptation. It does not, by itself, establish the accuracy or balance of every dramatized scene.

What is Freedom at Midnight based on?

SonyLIV lists Freedom at Midnight as a 2024 historical drama based on Larry Collins and Dominique Lapierre’s bestselling book. Its description centers on events leading to the Partition of India and Pakistan and the religious and socio-political upheaval of the era. The Season 1 listing likewise frames the story around the events leading to Partition and the period’s religious and political dynamics.

The adaptation’s India-centered point of view is part of Advani’s stated intention. It is useful to distinguish that intention from an independent historical assessment: the interviews and platform synopsis describe the series’ approach, but do not validate every depiction or resolve every contested historical question.

Where does Season 2 fit?

Season 1 covers the run-up to independence; Season 2 turns to the aftermath. The Hollywood Reporter India reported on December 10, 2025 that the second season would begin streaming on January 9, 2026. Advani described it as a move deeper into the country’s defining months, with attention to political corridors as well as the human stories shaped by turmoil, courage and difficult decisions. SonyLIV’s current listing shows two seasons. Catalogue availability can differ by geography, so check the platform in your region.
