Nigella Lawson’s 2022 stint as a judge on Australia’s My Kitchen Rules ended after the Group 1 episodes, with Matt Preston taking over for Group 2. Viewers quoted in contemporaneous coverage reacted to the short appearance with the line “MKR has catfished us with Nigella.” The report records the handover, but does not explain why it happened.
What happened on My Kitchen Rules in 2022?
ITV Studios Australia announced in June 2022 that Lawson would join the season alongside Manu Feildel. The format sent judges to dine in the homes of competing cooks, a setting Lawson said appealed to her because “the true story of food is told through the cooking we do at home.” ITV Studios Australia’s announcement
In an August 16, 2022 report, PerthNow said Lawson’s final episode had aired on Monday night after the Group 1 episodes. Matt Preston then took over for Group 2, while other celebrity chefs were also due to appear as guest judges. PerthNow’s report
Why did Nigella Lawson leave MKR?
The available contemporary report establishes a change of judges between the two groups in that season: Lawson’s run covered Group 1, and Preston took over for Group 2. It does not state the reason for the handover. It therefore supports describing this as the end of Lawson’s 2022 stint, not claiming that she was dismissed or permanently quit the franchise.

What did viewers mean by “MKR has catfished us with Nigella”?
PerthNow reported that some viewers were disappointed by Lawson’s brief appearance and used the phrase “MKR has catfished us with Nigella.” It also reported positive reactions from other viewers, so the headline captures a strand of audience response rather than a consensus or an official explanation from the show.
Lawson, as quoted by PerthNow, wrote: “I so loved my time on #MKR!” The report also quoted her thanking Feildel and the Group 1 teams, saying she missed them already, and describing herself as waving goodbye wistfully as Preston took over.

On January 26, 2026, Channel 4 and Love Productions announced Lawson as a new judge on The Great British Bake Off. That is a separate later appointment and does not change what the 2022 reporting says about the transition on My Kitchen Rules. Channel 4’s announcement
