The Carpenter’s Son drew opposition before its November 14, 2025 U.S. theatrical opening because it recasts a story about Jesus’ childhood as a supernatural thriller, with horror elements and a portrayal of Jesus as troubled and imperfect. The film is inspired by an account outside the New Testament canon, but director Lotfy Nathan also invented key elements. The claim that it was 2025’s “most controversial” movie is headline framing, not a documented ranking.
What is The Carpenter’s Son about?
Written and directed by Lotfy Nathan, the 2025 film stars Nicolas Cage as Joseph, alongside FKA twigs as Mary, Noah Jupe and Isla Johnston. Magnolia Pictures’ synopsis sets the story in Roman-era Egypt, where Joseph, Mary and their son encounter supernatural events after a mysterious stranger tempts the boy to defy his father’s rules. The studio describes it as a supernatural thriller; the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) categorizes it as horror. Magnolia Pictures’ film page
The original headline described the release as a month away. That was a pre-release framing: the Associated Press reported that the film was due in U.S. theaters on Friday, November 14, 2025. Associated Press, November 13, 2025
Why did the film draw controversy?
The dispute centered on two choices: using horror conventions for a story about Jesus, and depicting him as a troubled, imperfect child rather than presenting a familiar idealized image. Before release, TIME reported angry online comments, calls for a ban, review bombing and a death threat directed at Nathan. The Associated Press reported that the American Family Association denounced the film and urged people to sign a petition seeking to block its release. These reports document opposition, not a consensus among Christians or a measured ranking of the film against every other 2025 release. TIME Associated Press

Some angry comments called the film blasphemous, according to TIME. That is a reported reaction, not an established description of the film or a label shared by all viewers. Cage said, “Nobody wanted to offend anybody in the making of this movie,” and said viewers would find the material treated “with love and not with any approach of mockery or contempt.” Those remarks express the actor’s view of the production’s intentions; they do not settle how different audiences interpret the result. What is the Infancy Gospel of Thomas?
The film takes inspiration from the Infancy Gospel of Thomas, an ancient account of Jesus’ childhood that is not part of the New Testament canon. It is distinct from the canonical Gospels. Nathan told the Associated Press that he encountered the text through his father and used it as a starting point, filling gaps in the source. In a TIME interview, he said the mysterious stranger and the film’s father-son conflict were his own inventions. The film should therefore be understood as an adaptation inspired by an apocryphal text, not a direct screen version of a canonical Gospel or a claim that every scene comes from the ancient account. Did the filmmakers intend to make a horror movie?
The project is marketed as a supernatural thriller, and the BBFC classifies it as horror in the United Kingdom. Nathan told TIME, “I couldn’t take on this story as a pure horror movie,” describing horror as one tool for telling the story rather than its only purpose. Cage characterized his reading of the project as “a family drama about an existential crisis.” These are the filmmakers’ descriptions of their approach, not a reason to disregard the film’s horror classification or content guidance. Nathan also said, “There are a lot of very sanitized and conventional approaches to Christianity and to religious films.” That was his explanation for wanting to make a different kind of film, not a neutral description of religious cinema as a whole. TIME

Is it accurate to call it 2025’s most controversial movie?
There is clear reporting of public backlash and organized opposition, but the available accounts provide no comparative statistic or ranking establishing that The Carpenter’s Son was the year’s most controversial movie. The superlative works as headline rhetoric; it should not be read as a verified fact. The best-supported description is narrower: the film became a subject of visible controversy before release because of its religious subject matter, horror framing and adaptation choices.

The BBFC’s UK guidance flags strong bloody violence, injury detail and horror. It lists the film at approximately 94 minutes and provides a home-entertainment classification covering physical media and VOD/streaming.
