What Nicki Minaj said about the video
On July 9, 2023, Minaj reacted on X, formerly Twitter, after encountering the clip. Her response was sarcastic but unmistakably negative: “HELP!!! What in the AI shapeshifting cloning conspiracy theory is this?!?!! I hope the whole internet get deleted!!!”
That reaction supports describing Minaj as shocked, angry, distressed, or uncomfortable with the use and circulation of her likeness. It does not establish that she filed a lawsuit, sent a formal legal demand, secured damages, or obtained a confirmed takedown.
The video came from an ITVX comedy series
The footage originated with Deep Fake Neighbour Wars, a six-part, 30-minute comedy impressions series produced by Tiger Aspect, part of Banijay UK. ITV announced the program in November 2022 and planned its release on ITVX in January 2023. ITV’s listing describes the show as a comedy series in which impressionists are transformed into celebrity characters using deepfake technology and placed into fictional neighborhood conflicts.

The viral segment depicted fictional versions of Nicki Minaj and Tom Holland as a couple or newlyweds. Mark Zuckerberg appeared as their neighbor in the exaggerated dispute. The scenario was written as absurd entertainment; it was not a report about a real relationship, a secret marriage, or an encounter recorded in private.
ITVX’s episode descriptions show the wider premise, which uses celebrity impressions involving figures such as Rihanna, Kevin Hart, Beyoncé, Priyanka Chopra, Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa, Matthew McConaughey, Cardi B, and Simon Cowell. The show behind the viral clip was therefore a scripted television production, not a leaked recording.
Why calling it simply an “AI video” can be misleading
ITV described the production as using deepfake technology, but the program was not necessarily made by generating every element autonomously with artificial intelligence. Reporting on the production noted that impressionists supplied the voices. The visual face replacement was more convincing than the audio performance, according to Creative Bloq’s account.

The most accurate description is therefore: a scripted comedy segment using deepfake-style celebrity face replacement and impressionist performances. That wording distinguishes the show’s technology from a fully AI-generated video and makes clear that actors, writers, editors, and producers were involved.

Short clips can lose their original context when they are reposted on social media. A viewer who sees only the excerpt may not know whether it is:
- a scripted television scene;
- a parody or comedy sketch;
- an unauthorized manipulation;
- a news report; or
- a genuine recording from a person’s private life.
In this case, the celebrity faces and familiar public figures created an impression of authenticity, while the clip’s original program context was often absent from reposts. That made it easy for viewers to mistake fictional footage for a real event—and for Minaj to encounter an unsettling portrayal without the production context being immediately apparent.

The reputational and consent issues
The incident illustrates why synthetic and manipulated media can cause harm even when the original creators intended comedy. The OECD.AI incident record classifies the episode as involving generated videos that falsely portrayed Minaj and Holland as a couple. It identifies potential reputational, psychological, and broader human-rights harms.
That classification is not a court ruling or a finding that the production violated a particular law. Laws governing publicity rights, privacy, parody, copyright, defamation, and synthetic media vary by jurisdiction. The available reporting also does not establish that Minaj pursued a legal case.

The central issue is the gap between fictional intent and real-world circulation. A program may clearly be comedy in its original setting, yet the same clip can become misleading when stripped of its title card, episode information, or explanation. A person whose likeness is used may still object to how the image is presented or distributed, even if the segment was produced for entertainment.

How to verify a suspicious celebrity video
When a viral clip appears to show a celebrity in an unusual situation, check the provenance before treating it as evidence:
- Look for the original program or upload. Search distinctive dialogue, character combinations, or scene details rather than relying only on the repost’s caption.
- Check the broadcaster or production company. Official program pages and press materials can establish whether the footage belongs to a scripted series.
- Watch for context clues. Unnatural dialogue, inconsistent lip-sync, exaggerated premises, abrupt edits, and implausible celebrity interactions can indicate comedy, manipulation, or both.
- Compare reporting dates. In this case, Minaj’s July 9 reaction was followed by reports on July 11 identifying the source as Deep Fake Neighbour Wars.
- Do not infer a real relationship from a synthetic portrayal. The Minaj–Holland scenario was fictional and provides no evidence that the two were dating, married, or filmed together.
No detection method can guarantee a correct result from a compressed social-media clip. Provenance—the trail showing where a video came from—is often more useful than judging visual artifacts alone.
