Why Netflix Keeps Crashing—and How to Fix It on Any Device

Netflix crashes for different reasons depending on the symptom and scope. This guide shows how to separate app, device, network, display, account, and service problems, then fix each one safely.

Netflix usually crashes for one of four reasons: stale or corrupted app data, an app or device that needs restarting or updating, a network or routing problem, or a device-specific issue involving storage, firmware, HDMI, display protection, or compatibility. The fastest way to identify the cause is to compare scope: does Netflix fail on one device, on every device using the same network, or across different networks?

Use this order: fully restart the affected device, restart the modem and router, update Netflix and the device, sign out and back in, then clear app data or reinstall Netflix if necessary. Test another title, device, or network before performing a factory reset or buying replacement hardware. Netflix describes freezing and loading failures in terms of stored device data and network problems in its freezing and loading guidance.

First identify what “crashing” means

Different symptoms point to different fixes. An app that closes to the home screen is not the same problem as video that buffers or a TV that reboots.

Symptom Most likely area
Netflix closes immediately App data, firmware, storage, or device software
Netflix freezes while the rest of the device works App state, update, memory, or a title-specific playback fault
Loading wheel or “Can’t connect” message Wi-Fi, router, ISP, DNS, VPN/proxy, account, or service status
Video pauses repeatedly Connection quality, congestion, routing, or Wi-Fi interference
Video freezes while sound continues App, browser, display path, graphics driver, or DRM/HDCP
Black, white, or blank screen HDMI, HDCP, display, browser, or device compatibility
Only one show or movie fails Title-specific or device-specific playback issue
The entire TV or streamer reboots Heat, power, storage, firmware, or hardware

Netflix separates general freezing, connection errors, and video problems in its troubleshooting center.

Check whether Netflix is actually down

Open Netflix’s official Is Netflix Down? page. Netflix says outages are uncommon and updates that page when it knows of a streaming interruption. Social-media reports are not proof of a global outage.

  1. Check the official status page.
  2. Try Netflix on another device.
  3. If possible, test a different network, such as a phone hotspot.

If Netflix fails only on one device while the status page is clear, troubleshoot that device. Failure across several devices and networks makes an account- or service-side problem more plausible.

The five-minute, low-risk fix

1. Perform a complete restart

Standby is not always enough. Turn a phone, tablet, computer, TV, or streamer fully off and back on. For a powered TV or streaming device, unplug it, press its physical power button once if it has one, wait about one minute, then reconnect it. Fire TV guidance commonly uses an approximately 15-second unplugged interval; Netflix also describes leaving some devices unplugged for about three minutes. Shut down or restart a computer rather than merely closing the browser tab.

2. Restart the home network

  1. Turn off the affected streaming device.
  2. Unplug the modem and router.
  3. Wait at least 30 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the modem and router.
  5. Wait about one minute, or until internet service returns.
  6. Turn on the streaming device and test Netflix.

Some equipment takes longer to reconnect. If several devices remain affected, tell your ISP whether the problem occurs over Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or both.

3. Update everything

Install updates for Netflix, the TV firmware, Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Chromecast or Google TV, game-console software, Android, iOS/iPadOS, Windows, macOS, and the browser used for Netflix. On Roku, official playback guidance recommends updating an app that will not open or crashes.

4. Refresh the Netflix session

On many TVs and streamers, open Netflix, choose Get Help, choose Sign out, confirm, and sign in again. Labels vary by model. An error screen may instead offer More Details, Sign out, or Reset.

5. Clear data or reinstall

Do this only after confirming that you know your sign-in details. Clearing storage or deleting the app removes downloaded titles.

Platform-specific fixes

Android phones and tablets

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose Apps or Applications, then Netflix.
  3. Open Storage & cache.
  4. Choose Clear cache.
  5. If necessary, choose Clear storage or Clear data, then sign in again.

Android labels differ by manufacturer and version. Netflix warns in its connection troubleshooting that clearing app data removes downloads.

iPhone and iPad

iOS and iPadOS generally do not provide a manual Netflix cache button. Delete Netflix, restart the device, reinstall it from the App Store, and sign in again. This also removes downloaded titles and local app data.

Browsers on Windows or Mac

If Netflix works in one browser but not another, go to netflix.com/clearcookies, sign in again, and retry. Clearing cookies signs you out and may remove related browser state. Also update the browser and, on Windows, the graphics driver.

  • Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound

Roku

  1. Restart the Roku.
  2. Remove Netflix.
  3. Restart the Roku again.
  4. Add Netflix from the Roku Streaming Store.
  5. Sign in.

Check the connection at Settings > Network > About. Roku also recommends trying another title when only one show or movie fails. Its feature-recovery instructions are available in Roku’s streaming-app support.

Smart TVs

Power-cycle the TV, update its firmware and Netflix app, sign out, and reinstall Netflix if the model permits it. Reset the TV’s network connection before considering a factory reset. A factory reset erases apps, accounts, Wi-Fi credentials, and personal settings. If firmware updates and the manufacturer’s reset procedure do not help, use another supported device or contact the TV maker.

Fire TV, Apple TV, Google TV, Chromecast, and consoles

Use the platform’s restart, app-update, sign-out, and uninstall/reinstall controls. Menu names vary by model and operating-system version, so do not assume an Android cache path exists on a TV or console. If other apps also crash or the device reboots, prioritize the platform maker’s support rather than repeatedly reinstalling Netflix.

If Netflix buffers or cannot connect

Buffering usually implicates the connection more than the app itself. Visit Fast.com, which tests directly against Netflix’s network. Treat the result as a clue, not a verdict: a high download rate does not rule out packet loss, Wi-Fi interference, DNS problems, router instability, or a VPN route.

  • Move closer to the router or try another Wi-Fi band.
  • Test Ethernet if the device and router support it.
  • Temporarily disable a VPN or proxy as a diagnostic step.
  • Check whether several household devices are affected.
  • Contact the ISP if the issue persists across devices after the network restart.

If Netflix works through a phone hotspot but not home Wi-Fi, the home network becomes the leading suspect, although the test does not prove the ISP is solely responsible.

  • Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight

If the screen is black or the picture is distorted

Netflix’s video troubleshooting and guidance for distorted, glitchy, skipping, or stuttering video treat display faults separately from ordinary app crashes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Try another HDMI port and another HDMI cable.
  • Temporarily remove an HDMI switch, receiver, or capture device.
  • Use the TV’s built-in Netflix app instead of the external player, or reverse that test.
  • Test one monitor instead of multiple displays.
  • Update the browser and graphics driver.

A problem affecting only one external display can indicate HDCP copy-protection negotiation or an incompatible display path. Lowering resolution may help a bandwidth or display-compatibility problem, but it is not a universal crash fix.

Use the scope of the failure as a decision tree

Netflix crashes immediately on one device

  1. Restart it fully.
  2. Update Netflix and system software.
  3. Sign out and back in.
  4. Clear data or reinstall.
  5. Test another Netflix-compatible device.

Insufficient storage, overheating, unsupported hardware, or a device software bug becomes more likely if other apps also fail.

Every device on the same Wi-Fi buffers or cannot connect

Check the service-status page, restart the modem and router, run Fast.com, test Ethernet or another Wi-Fi band, disable VPN/proxy settings temporarily, and contact the ISP if several devices remain affected.

Netflix works on a phone but not on the TV

Compare the TV’s built-in app with an external streamer, update and reinstall Netflix, and try the TV or streamer on a phone hotspot. If only the home connection fails, investigate Wi-Fi or the router; if only the TV fails, investigate its firmware, app data, HDMI path, or age.

Only one title fails

Try another title, another profile, another device, and the same title later. Roku specifically recommends testing other content for a title-specific playback failure.

The whole TV or streamer reboots

Check ventilation, power, free storage, firmware, and whether other apps trigger reboots. A system-level crash or hardware fault is more likely than a Netflix account problem.

Record the error before contacting support

Write down the exact code, device model, app and firmware versions, Wi-Fi or Ethernet status, whether other titles work, whether other apps work, and whether Netflix works on another device or network. Enter the code or symptom in Netflix’s searchable troubleshooting center. Avoid applying a generic explanation to code families such as NW-* or UI-800-*; instructions depend on the device and region.

When hardware replacement is reasonable

Buying hardware is not the first-line fix. Consider it only when an older TV platform is unsupported, no longer receives updates, or remains unstable after software and network checks.

Option When it helps Limits
Roku streaming player Replacing a slow or unsupported built-in TV app Does not fix an ISP outage or account problem; U.S. prices retrieved in August 2026 ranged from $29.99 for the HD Streaming Stick to $99.99 for Roku Ultra and can change
Google TV Streamer Homes already using Google TV, Google Home, Android, or Google Play The official product page did not state a reliable current price
Ethernet cable or compatible adapter Reducing Wi-Fi instability or isolating a wireless problem Requires compatible ports and cannot repair app corruption or an ISP outage
Router or mesh system Whole-home dead zones, frequent disconnects, or an unstable router Overkill for a single-TV app crash

Roku’s current lineup is listed at Roku’s official players page; the Streaming Stick 4K specifications are at its official product page. Treat prices and availability as U.S. signals from August 2026, not permanent prices or worldwide offers.

Who should handle the unresolved problem?

  • Netflix: a Netflix-only failure across supported devices, account errors, exact error codes, or a suspected service incident.
  • ISP: several devices on the same network, unstable service, or a confirmed local outage.
  • Device manufacturer: reboots, overheating, outdated firmware, hardware faults, or multiple apps crashing.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
