Neil Young returned his music to Spotify in March 2024 after more than two years away—but he did not say that he had changed his mind about misinformation or become satisfied with Spotify. His explanation was practical: the podcast issue he had protested was no longer confined to Spotify, while leaving Apple and Amazon as well would have cut his music off from too much of his audience.
Young also returned with a continuing complaint about Spotify’s audio quality. In other words, he ended a one-platform boycott, not his broader criticism of streaming platforms or their editorial decisions.
What happened between Neil Young and Spotify?
On January 24–26, 2022, Neil Young published an open letter demanding that Spotify remove his music or remove The Joe Rogan Experience. Spotify honored Young’s request and took his catalog off the service. The dispute was not about a disagreement over music; it was about Spotify’s role in distributing Rogan’s podcast and claims that Young regarded as false or dangerous COVID-19-vaccine information.
Young’s protest was followed by Joni Mitchell, who also removed her music from Spotify. At the time, Rogan’s program was a Spotify exclusive, having been tied to the platform since 2020. That exclusivity made Spotify the clear focus of Young’s ultimatum: he could either continue placing his music on the service or object to the platform’s relationship with Rogan, but not do both.

Spotify did not remove Rogan because of Young’s protest. The sequence was the opposite: Young withdrew his catalog, Spotify retained Rogan, and Young later restored his music.

Why did Neil Young return?
Young’s stated reason was that Spotify was no longer the only major service carrying the type of podcast content he had objected to. He said Apple and Amazon had begun carrying comparable material. Since he could not reasonably leave Apple and Amazon as well without abandoning a large part of his audience, singling out Spotify no longer achieved the same purpose.
Rogan’s expanded distribution changed the practical meaning of Young’s boycott. When the show was exclusive to Spotify, removing his music could be understood as a direct protest against one platform’s decision. Once the program was moving beyond Spotify—including toward Apple, YouTube, and Amazon—the same protest could no longer isolate Spotify from the issue.
That is why the most accurate interpretation is not that Young withdrew his criticism. He abandoned a boycott aimed at one platform after the underlying distribution landscape changed.
What did Joe Rogan have to do with it?
The Joe Rogan Experience was central because it was Spotify-exclusive when Young made his demand. Young objected to the platform’s distribution of podcast claims that he and other critics characterized as COVID-19-vaccine misinformation. Those allegations belong to a contentious public and scientific debate; they should not be presented here as a settled medical finding.

The narrower, well-established point is that Young believed Spotify was enabling or distributing harmful misinformation and used his catalog as leverage. The conflict concerned platform responsibility, editorial judgment, and association with Rogan—not the quality or content of Young’s recordings.
Young still disliked Spotify’s audio quality
Young’s return was qualified by a second criticism. In his announcement, he described Spotify as a low-resolution streaming service and argued that listeners would not hear the full sound quality created for his recordings. He pointed readers toward Qobuz and Tidal as higher-resolution alternatives.
That claim should be understood as Young’s position, not as a universal independent ranking of streaming services. Audio quality can depend on the service’s available formats, the particular release, the listener’s plan and equipment, and how a recording has been mastered. The available reporting documents Young’s dissatisfaction, but it does not establish that one service is best for every listener.

- Spotify: Young’s catalog is available there at the time of this research, making it a convenient option for listeners already using the service.
- Qobuz or Tidal: These are the high-resolution alternatives Young named, but current plans, audio formats, prices, catalog completeness, and availability should be checked in the listener’s country before subscribing.
- Physical editions: CDs and records avoid the uncertainty of changing streaming catalogs and may be preferable to listeners who want to own a particular master or edition.
What Neil Young music is available?
Spotify’s artist pages currently list well-known songs including “Heart of Gold,” “Harvest Moon,” “Old Man,” and “Rockin’ in the Free World,” along with albums and other releases. That does not mean every Neil Young recording is available in every country. Rights agreements, regional licensing, reissues, and individual editions can all affect what appears in a listener’s catalog.
Anyone looking for a specific album should search for that release rather than assume that Young’s entire archive is present. This matters especially for live recordings, rarities, alternate versions, and archival projects.
If you want to own the music instead
Physical releases are a useful alternative for listeners who do not want their access to depend entirely on a streaming platform. Amazon’s Neil Young listings include releases such as Harvest, Harvest Moon, Time Fades Away, Homegrown, Young Shakespeare, Noise and Flowers, and greatest-hits collections. Prices, stock, formats, sellers, and editions can change, so check the exact listing before buying.
For a general introduction, a Neil Young Greatest Hits CD or vinyl release is the simplest starting point. It offers familiar songs without requiring a listener to navigate the differences between streaming editions.
For listeners more interested in archival material, Neil Young Archives Vol. II is a 10-CD box set covering 1972–1976. The set contains 131 tracks, including unreleased, alternate, rare, and live material. It is a much more specialized purchase than a greatest-hits collection, but it directly suits fans who want a deeper look at Young’s work from that period.
Harvest remains another accessible physical choice for listeners drawn to “Heart of Gold,” “Old Man,” and the album’s broader place in Young’s catalog. Confirm whether a listing is for vinyl, CD, a particular anniversary edition, or another reissue before ordering.

What Young’s decision says about streaming boycotts
Young’s return illustrates the limits of a boycott aimed at only one distribution outlet. A withdrawal can be symbolically powerful when the disputed content, contract, or policy is concentrated on a single service. It becomes more complicated when competing platforms carry similar material and the artist’s audience is spread across several ecosystems.
There was also a direct trade-off for Young. Leaving Spotify reduced his presence on one major service, but leaving Apple and Amazon as well would have made his music harder for many listeners to find. His decision suggests that audience access eventually outweighed the value of maintaining a Spotify-specific protest.

That does not make the return a public endorsement of Spotify. Young paired the announcement with an audio-quality complaint and continued to point listeners toward alternatives. The decision was better understood as a change in tactics than as a reversal of principle.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. The short answer
Neil Young returned to Spotify because the Joe Rogan podcast was no longer limited to Spotify, and similar podcast content was available through other major services. He said that continuing to boycott Spotify alone would not address the broader issue, while also depriving his music of a large audience. He remained critical of Spotify’s sound quality and recommended Qobuz and Tidal for listeners seeking higher-resolution options.
Spotify currently lists Young’s music, but availability is time- and region-dependent. Readers who want dependable access to a particular album or edition should consider buying the physical release rather than relying only on a streaming catalog.

Frequently Asked Questions
Did Neil Young return to Spotify because Spotify removed Joe Rogan?
No. Spotify retained The Joe Rogan Experience. Young returned after Spotify announced that Rogan’s show would expand to additional platforms, which meant that a Spotify-only boycott no longer isolated the service from the issue he had protested.
When did Neil Young’s music return to Spotify?
Young announced the return on March 12–13, 2024. Spotify artist pages list his catalog at the time of this research, although individual releases can vary by country and licensing arrangement.
Was Neil Young satisfied with Spotify’s audio quality?
No. Young returned while criticizing what he described as Spotify’s low-resolution audio. He pointed listeners toward Qobuz and Tidal, though that was his stated preference rather than an independently verified ranking for every listener.
Can I buy Neil Young’s music instead of streaming it?
Yes. Physical listings include greatest-hits releases, Harvest, and the archival Neil Young Archives Vol. II box set. Prices, stock, sellers, and editions are subject to change.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Neil Young did not say that his concerns had disappeared. He ended a Spotify-specific protest because Joe Rogan’s distribution had expanded beyond Spotify and because leaving every major service would have cut off too much of his audience. His return was pragmatic, and his criticism of Spotify’s audio quality remained.
