His explanation: winning HGTV’s Design Star felt like his own lottery win—and he would rather spend money on canoes than scratch-off tickets.
Why David Bromstad said he doesn’t play the lottery
In a September 21, 2018 interview with TheWrap, Bromstad said he did not play, even though his work put him alongside lottery winners. “I won ‘Design Star’ and that was my lottery,” he said. He was describing the career opportunity figuratively—not claiming to have won a lottery drawing.
Bromstad added that he found it hard to justify spending $30, $20 or even $10 on scratchers, saying, “I just don’t play enough. I’d rather buy canoes.” Those amounts were examples he gave of possible scratcher purchases, not statistics about lottery spending.
How that fits with My Lottery Dream Home
The irony is that Bromstad hosts My Lottery Dream Home, a series in which he takes recent lottery winners on house hunts. That is the premise described by HGTV; it does not mean Bromstad promotes lottery play or won a lottery prize himself.

His connection to Design Star is also part of his career history: HGTV’s official biography identifies him as the winner of the show’s first season and says that win began his HGTV tenure.
What his 2018 comment does—and doesn’t—tell us
The interview records what Bromstad said in 2018. It does not establish whether he has played the lottery or changed his view since then, so it is more accurate to describe his stated preference at the time than to treat it as confirmation of his current habits. Nor does the remark establish an anti-lottery campaign or a broader financial philosophy: he was explaining his own choice.
