Some follow a local or regional crescent sighting, while others accept a sighting from farther away; authorities also differ on how astronomical calculations should be used. A religious or state body usually makes the announcement for its jurisdiction, so the date is not settled by astronomy alone.
What determines the date of Eid al-Fitr?
Eid al-Fitr begins on 1 Shawwal, the month after Ramadan. In the religious guidance cited by Egypt’s Dar al-Ifta and Jordan’s Iftaa Department, a lunar month is treated as 29 or 30 days. Communities therefore look for the crescent marking the start of Shawwal; if it is not established under the rule they follow, Ramadan completes 30 days.
The disagreement is not about whether Eid follows Ramadan. It is about which sighting counts, how evidence is assessed, and whose announcement governs a community. There is no single sighting rule followed worldwide.
Why can countries reach different decisions?
They may accept sightings from different places
A sighting can be treated as local, regional, or relevant across a much wider area. Singapore’s Office of the Mufti says the country’s zone differs from Saudi Arabia’s and advises Muslims to follow the date determined for their respective zone. Egypt’s Dar al-Ifta says a country that conducts its own sighting follows that process, while a country that relies on another country should follow a nearby Muslim country.

Jordan’s Iftaa Department describes two established views: distant countries may have separate horizons, or one confirmed sighting may bind other countries. It identifies the matter as disputed and says the ruler or representative settles it within a jurisdiction. These are differing institutional positions, not a universally adopted rule.
They may assess the crescent and calculations differently
The astronomical conjunction—the moment the Moon is new—is calculable. It is not the same as seeing the thin crescent: visibility comes later and depends on time, location, and observing conditions. A predicted date can help explain when a sighting might be possible, but it does not by itself tell you which religious criterion a community applies.

Authorities also differ on the religious role of calculation. Dar al-Ifta describes a position in which calculation can rule out a purported sighting that is astronomically impossible. It also describes circumstances in which calculations by proficient astronomers can establish Shawwal if specified conditions are met. That is Dar al-Ifta’s guidance; it should not be presented as the universal Muslim position.
A local authority makes the announcement
Religious councils, courts, or government bodies may receive reports and announce the date for their jurisdiction. A forecast, calendar, or visibility map is not necessarily the final religious announcement. For example, a notice from Majmaah University in Saudi Arabia said its observatory would observe following a call from the Supreme Court.

Saudi Arabia’s decision is not automatically binding worldwide. Singapore’s guidance explicitly advises following the sighting determined for the respective zone, while other authorities take different positions. A 2025 Charles Sturt University thesis documents local, regional, and Saudi-following approaches among Muslims in Australia, showing that different practices can exist within one country as well as between countries.

On 10 March 2024, the Associated Press reported that Saudi Arabia and several other countries would begin Ramadan on Monday after a crescent was reported. Australia, Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Oman, and Jordan announced Tuesday after the crescent was not seen. This was a difference in Ramadan start dates, not evidence that those countries always set Eid on different days. It illustrates how observation rules and the authorities applying them can yield different calendar outcomes; the same kinds of decisions arise when Ramadan ends.

AP described the global Muslim population as 1.8 billion in that 2024 report. That is the estimate AP used at the time, not a newly verified current census count.
What should you do if you are traveling?
Rulings can vary, so follow the religious authority you normally rely on or ask a trusted local scholar. Dar al-Ifta’s guidance for someone who began Ramadan in Egypt and then travels generally says to follow the community where the person is present at the end of the month. It notes exceptions involving a sighting that conflicts with definitive calculation or would make Ramadan shorter than 29 days or longer than 30. This is one authority’s answer, not a universal ruling.

A one-day difference can follow from a community’s chosen geographic scope, evidentiary criteria, use of calculation, and official decision-making process. It does not by itself mean that one side has ignored astronomy or that Muslims disagree about the meaning of Eid. As Dar al-Ifta puts it in its crescent-sighting guidance, “The matter of sighting the crescent must not be a cause for controversy between Muslims to preserve their unity following the words of Allah.”
