The strongest supported reason Mike Hanlon stays in Derry is that he becomes the town’s investigator and historian: he wants to uncover and record what happened there. Episode 4 adds a possible family-history explanation for that vigilance through Mike’s future father, Will, but the show has not confirmed that Will’s experience gives Mike inherited supernatural sensitivity or causes him to stay.

Why Mike stays: his role is to investigate Derry

Andy Muschietti, the series co-creator and director, describes Mike as “the bookkeeper” and “the only Loser who stays in town.” He says Mike has “a stronger drive to get to the truth of things,” and adds, “We owed it to the Hanlons to tell their story.” Those comments, reported by TVLine from an Entertainment Weekly interview, give the clearest answer: Mike remains because he is compelled to investigate Derry and preserve its history.

That function comes from Stephen King’s novel, where Mike’s interludes document his research into Derry’s past. SciFiNow describes them as journal entries from Mike, who stays in town and becomes its librarian; Muschietti characterizes the accumulated investigation as fragmented and inconclusive. Esquire likewise presents Mike as the historian who stays behind to trace the entity’s origins. His work does not guarantee that every mystery will be solved. It gives him a reason to keep watching and recording the cycles.

What episode 4 adds to the Hanlon family theory

Episode 4, “The Great Swirling Apparatus of Our Planet’s Function,” puts Mike’s future father, Will Hanlon, in contact with Derry’s danger. Will senses something is wrong and is targeted during a fishing outing. The episode also shows the Hanlon family living close to the town’s concealed history, giving Mike’s later vigilance a plausible personal root: the threat is not merely an abstract subject for him to study.

That is an interpretation, not confirmed canon. Episode 4 does not establish that Will’s encounter passes supernatural sensitivity to Mike, nor does a creator statement identify inherited ability as Mike’s reason for staying. The most careful reading is that the family’s experience may help explain why Mike has a personal stake, while his investigative drive explains what he does with that stake.

How strong are the two explanations?

Explanation Support What it explains
Mike stays to investigate and document Derry Explicitly supported by Muschietti’s comments and Mike’s role in the novel. His adult purpose in town: uncovering and recording its history.
The Hanlons’ experience shapes Mike’s vigilance Plausible inference from Will’s episode 4 encounter and the family’s connection to Derry; not confirmed as Mike’s motive. A possible personal and family background for his later commitment.
Mike inherits supernatural sensitivity Not established by episode 4 or the cited creator comments. A speculative explanation only; it should not be treated as fact.

Why It stays in Derry is a different question

Episode 4 also expands the show’s account of why the entity is confined to the Derry area. Through Dick Hallorann, Taniel recounts the creature’s arrival in a fallen star and the Shokopiwah effort to contain it. Episode analyses describe star fragments set as a boundary or pillars holding It within the area, with later settlers disrupting that containment. This is the series’ adaptation lore, not an explanation of Mike’s choice to remain and not a claim about real-world Indigenous history.

Co-showrunner Jason Fuchs distinguishes the monster’s geography as a central mystery: “the question of why Derry, why this spot and why it stays cycle after cycle” is one of the canon’s enduring mysteries, as quoted by ComicBook.com. That question concerns why It is tied to the place. Mike’s reason for staying is more grounded in his role as investigator and keeper of Derry’s record.

How episode 4 frames the family stakes

The family theory gains emotional force from the episode’s portrayal of the adults around the children. The A.V. Club reads Will as one of the few parents presented as a positive force, and connects the horror to adults’ inability to protect children. Its review also discusses Charlotte Hanlon’s anger at injustice and Hallorann’s psychic interrogation of a local Native teen. These are critical interpretations of the episode, not official explanations of Mike’s future choices, but they show why the Hanlon family’s experience can matter to the story beyond supernatural lore.

The best-supported reading of the theory

Episode 4 can make Mike’s later commitment feel inherited in the ordinary sense of family history: Will encounters the danger, and Mike grows into the person who studies what the town tries to conceal. The stronger claim—that he has a hereditary power or stays because his family is uniquely resistant to Derry’s influence—goes beyond what the episode confirms. The creator-supported answer remains simpler and firmer: Mike stays because he is driven to find the truth and keep a record of Derry’s past.
