He later called making the sequel a “big roll of the dice”—but his doubts did not mean he regretted taking part. In March 2024, he said making it was more fun than making the original.
Why Keaton wondered whether they should leave Beetlejuice alone
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, as quoted by Uproxx on August 27, 2024, Keaton described the central hesitation: “The only thing I worried about was, should we have left it alone? You know? Should we have just said that: ‘Don’t touch it. Just walk away. Go make your other movies,’ which we did. So, for me, it was a big roll of the dice.” Uproxx’s report presents the phrase as Keaton’s description of the risk of making a sequel to a film that had stood on its own for decades—not as a verdict on the finished movie.

He expressed a similar hesitation on Late Night with Seth Meyers. TheWrap reported on August 21, 2024, that Keaton said there had been “a big, big long period of time where I thought, ‘Don’t touch it, just leave it alone.’” TheWrap’s account reinforces that the question of whether to revisit the original had occupied him for a long time.
Why he eventually came back
The sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, reunited Keaton with director Tim Burton and brought back Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara. Jenna Ortega joined the cast as Lydia Deetz’s daughter. Entertainment Tonight’s March 8, 2024 interview placed Keaton’s doubts alongside his decision to return: he said he had not expected them to make the sequel and at times did not want to, but added that making it “was more fun than the other one.”

Those comments describe two different parts of the same decision. Keaton could question whether a sequel was worth the risk and still enjoy making it once the project took shape. His return was also part of a reunion with Burton, whose original 1988 film established the character and the offbeat world the sequel revisited.
His concern was also about how much Beetlejuice to put on screen
Keaton’s caution extended beyond whether to make a sequel at all. Forbes reported comments he made to GQ about keeping the character from overwhelming the film: “The idea was, no, no, no, you can’t load it up with Beetlejuice, that’ll kill it.” The point was balance: making the title character central did not mean filling every part of the story with him. Forbes also quoted Keaton describing the production’s approach as “handmade”: “When I say handmade, it’s literally handmade.” Forbes reported both remarks as comments from GQ.

What “big roll of the dice” means—and what it does not
Keaton was talking about the creative risk of reopening a story after a long gap: whether revisiting a much-loved original was the right choice, and how to make a follow-up without letting its central character dominate the film. His later comments show that hesitation and enthusiasm coexisted. He worried about whether the sequel should exist, returned to play Beetlejuice, and said the experience of making it was more fun than making the first film.
Fandango’s August 5, 2024 coverage described Beetlejuice Beetlejuice as the sequel to Burton’s 1988 film and featured interviews with cast members including Keaton, Willem Dafoe, Justin Theroux, Ortega, and Monica Bellucci. Its article listed September 6, 2024, as the planned opening date; that release-date information is historical.
