Melissa Barrera was removed from Scream 7 by production company Spyglass Media Group after it objected to her social-media posts about the Israel-Hamas war. Jenna Ortega’s exit was first reported as a scheduling conflict, but in 2025 she said it had nothing to do with scheduling or pay: the project was falling apart, and the creative team she had joined was no longer in place. The departures came close together, but the explanations were different.
Why was Melissa Barrera removed from Scream 7?
Spyglass Media Group dismissed Barrera from the film in November 2023. The Los Angeles Times reported that Spyglass confirmed the decision to Variety and tied it to comments the company characterized as antisemitic. The company’s stated rationale was its own position on her posts, not an independently adjudicated finding.

A Spyglass spokesperson said the company had “zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate” and characterized the posts as crossing into hate speech. The Times reproduced an Instagram Story in which Barrera wrote that Gaza was “currently being treated like a concentration camp” and called the situation “GENOCIDE & ETHNIC CLEANSING.” Those phrases are Barrera’s words as reproduced by the Times.
Why did Jenna Ortega leave?
The initial scheduling report
When Ortega’s departure was reported on November 22, 2023, early coverage said it had reportedly been connected to the schedule for season two of Wednesday. The same contemporaneous reporting said her exit had been discussed with Spyglass before the actors’ strike and was not related to Barrera’s firing or a contract dispute. The Los Angeles Times’ report presented scheduling as the explanation circulating at the time.

Ortega’s later explanation
In an interview with The Cut, reported by the Los Angeles Times in April 2025, Ortega said her decision “had nothing to do with pay or scheduling.” She said, “The Melissa stuff was happening, and it was all kind of falling apart.” Ortega also explained that without the directors and other people she had connected with, returning did not seem like the right career move at the time.
Were the two departures connected?
The timing made the exits look linked, but the available accounts describe separate decisions. Spyglass removed Barrera and explained that choice by referring to her social-media posts. Ortega left; early reporting said her decision had been discussed before the actors’ strike and was not a response to Barrera’s dismissal. Her later account adds that the turmoil around Barrera and the loss of the creative team affected how she viewed the project. That does not make the two exits the same decision or establish that Ortega was dismissed.

How did Scream 7 change after they left?
Director Christopher Landon also exited after the upheaval. In a post on X reproduced by the Los Angeles Times, he described the job as a “dream job that turned into a nightmare” and said his departure was not his decision to make. Kevin Williamson later took over directing, and Neve Campbell returned as Sidney Prescott. The Associated Press’ 2026 account of the film describes it as retooled around Campbell and the returning cast.
