Mel Gibson said he was surprised when President-elect Donald Trump announced him as one of three special envoys to Hollywood on January 15, 2025, because he learned of the news at the same time as the public. Gibson said he would help as a citizen, but contemporary reporting did not clarify what practical duties the role involved.
What did Trump announce?
On January 15, 2025, Trump announced on Truth Social that Mel Gibson, Jon Voight and Sylvester Stallone would be his “Special Ambassadors” to Hollywood. The Associated Press also described them as special envoys. Trump said the three would serve as his eyes and ears in the movie industry and expressed a hope that Hollywood would become “bigger, better, and stronger.” He wrote, “It will again be, like The United States of America itself, The Golden Age of Hollywood!” (The Associated Press.)

Why was Gibson surprised?
Gibson said he had not been told about the announcement in advance. In a statement reproduced by the AP, he said: “I got the news at the same time as all of you and was just as surprised. Nevertheless, I heed the call. My duty as a citizen is to give any help and insight I can.” (The Associated Press.)

The announcement used the labels “Special Ambassadors” and special envoys, but the reports did not define the trio’s authority or set out specific duties. The AP characterized the remit as unclear. The title should therefore be understood as Trump’s announced envoy label, not evidence by itself of a Senate-confirmed diplomatic ambassadorship.
A January 20, 2025 White House list of cabinet and cabinet-level appointments does not include Gibson, Voight or Stallone among the formal nominations it lists. That page is a record of those appointments; it does not, on its own, determine the status or practical meaning of Trump’s separately announced Hollywood envoy label. (The White House.)

Why was Hollywood in the announcement’s context?
The AP situated Trump’s announcement amid production challenges following the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2023 Hollywood guild strikes and Los Angeles-area wildfires. Its January 2025 report cited two different measures with different geographic scopes and baselines:
