Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird met while preparing for the 2016 Rio Olympics, got engaged in October 2020, and announced on April 17, 2026, that they were separating after about a decade together. Their announcement described the decision as mutual and said their shared podcast, A Touch More, would conclude with six special episodes. They had been engaged; the cited reporting does not establish that they married.
2016: They met while preparing for the Rio Olympics
Rapinoe and Bird first met in an Olympics-related press setting as they prepared for the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro. The Knot places their first encounter during a press interview, and ABC also dates their meeting to the Olympic buildup. Their later accounts described an awkward first exchange: Rapinoe asked Bird whether she was ready for her game, then worried she had made a poor impression. Bird later teased her about it. The Knot’s relationship timeline and ABC News’ engagement report recount the meeting.
2017: Bird publicly confirmed their relationship
In July 2017, Bird publicly came out and identified Rapinoe as her girlfriend in an ESPNW interview. The Knot reproduces Bird’s statement: “I’m gay. Megan’s my girlfriend…These aren’t secrets to people who know me.” This was distinct from Rapinoe’s earlier public discussion of her sexuality in 2012; Bird’s 2017 announcement was a public confirmation of their relationship.
2018: They appeared together in ESPN The Magazine’s Body Issue
In June 2018, the couple appeared together in ESPN The Magazine’s Body Issue. The Knot identifies them as the first same-sex couple featured in the issue. The appearance became one of the most visible shared milestones in their public story.
