Treat both as reported claims rather than confirmed reasons.
Which Angola trip this refers to
The headline’s most likely reference is Harry’s solo visit to Angola in July 2025. It is easy to confuse with an earlier trip. Harry and Meghan also toured southern Africa in 2019, and that tour included Angola. The two trips are different, and the reasons reported for 2025 do not apply to 2019.

What the July 2025 visit involved
Harry’s visit supported The HALO Trust’s landmine-clearance work and renewed his public association with the campaign to make Angola mine-free. The Sussexes’ official account says he took part in a landmine-safety education session in Mawano, where he gave children instructions on recognising and avoiding mines. The account also tied the visit to his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, whose 1997 visit to Angola drew international attention to landmines.
Town & Country reported on July 15, 2025 that Harry had arrived in Angola to support HALO Trust and noted his earlier visit in 2019. At that time it said no further details of the 2025 trip had been shared.

The reported reasons for Meghan’s absence
Two explanations were published. Both come from people who were not named, and neither has been confirmed by the couple. A third, broader point also appeared in one report, as context rather than a stated cause.
Security concerns (ELLE, citing the Daily Mail)
ELLE reported that a source told the Daily Mail that Harry’s decision to travel without Meghan was primarily due to security concerns. ELLE quoted the source directly: “The Duke [of Sussex] won’t let his wife go to England over security concerns, so there was no chance he’d allow her to go to Angola to walk across landmines.” This is an anonymous claim relayed through a second outlet. It is not a statement from Harry or Meghan.

Childcare (The Daily Beast)
The Daily Beast reported in July 2025 that sources close to Harry said Meghan was looking after the couple’s children at home. The same report said those sources rejected the suggestion that Harry left Meghan behind so that she would not be overshadowed. These are anonymous-source statements. The report does not give independent evidence for the childcare explanation.
Separate work and parenting priorities (ELLE, citing a friend)
ELLE also cited a friend’s earlier explanation that the couple’s work was developing along separate tracks and that parenting priorities meant one parent stayed with the children. This describes the couple’s broader situation. It does not establish that it determined the Angola decision.

The 2019 tour, by contrast, is documented in the Royal Family’s archived itinerary. That record shows the couple’s schedules were split during that tour, but it does not explain why. Use it as a reference for 2019 only, not as evidence for the 2025 decision.
