Mario’s staying power is not just nostalgia: singer Meghan Trainor says the games let her revisit her own childhood while sharing that pleasure with her husband and sons. Her experience offers one personal explanation for why Mario can connect generations; Nintendo creators point to another, describing a character built for clarity and a series that keeps changing without losing its basic fun.
How Mario became a family connection for Meghan Trainor
In a March 10, 2025 Digital Trends interview, published during Mario Day coverage and the 40th-anniversary year of the original Super Mario Bros., Trainor describes a chain of shared play across her life. She grew up gaming with her two brothers, later played Mario games with her husband, and now enjoys introducing the games and characters to her sons.

For Trainor, playing with her children brings childhood memories into the present. She also points to the games’ vivid visuals and the excitement her children show. “It’s how we bond as a family and it’s so cute to watch Riley watch us play,” she told Digital Trends. That is her family’s experience, not evidence that every household relates to Mario in the same way.
The feature names Super Mario Bros. Wonder, which Trainor played between tour shows, and describes her family’s play. In a separate March 10, 2025 interview with Bleeding Cool, she also praised Super Mario Party Jamboree. Of the franchise’s continued presence, she said, “It’s very interesting and cool to see something still exist, and not only exist but be cooler than ever.”

Why the original Mario was easy to recognize and play
Trainor’s story explains one kind of appeal: personal memories can become shared family rituals. Nintendo’s own retrospective offers a different explanation rooted in design. In its Iwata Asks conversation about the original game, Shigeru Miyamoto recalled that technical limits shaped Mario’s appearance. With very few pixels available, a hat, large nose, moustache, and overalls helped make the character readable. Nintendo staff said those defining lines remained recognizable as graphics improved.
The same retrospective places the game in its original setting: unlike arcade games designed around brief visits, Super Mario Bros. was made for people to play at home. Satoru Iwata, then Nintendo president, reflected, “I feel like video games really changed when Super Mario Bros. came out, followed by Dragon Quest.” The conversation also notes that younger students enjoyed the old game, showing how its appeal could reach beyond the audience that first encountered it.

Why Mario has to keep changing
Familiarity alone cannot explain four decades of relevance. In an October 28, 2025 report, Video Games Chronicle summarized remarks by Mario creators Takashi Tezuka and Shigeru Miyamoto from an interview in a Nintendo Museum anniversary book. Tezuka described the need to keep changing Mario’s actions and the kinds of fun the games offer. Miyamoto said new digital technology should be incorporated while preserving the series’ interactive core, including running and jumping.
Tezuka put the challenge plainly: “If it’s not fun to play, you’ll get bored, and I’m always thinking of how to keep it so that something like that doesn’t happen so that people keep playing.” Their comments are creator perspectives, but they clarify the balance: Mario needs recognizable foundations and fresh ways to play. The series’ 40th anniversary fell in 2025, forty years after Super Mario Bros. first appeared in 1985.

What Trainor’s story can—and cannot—tell us
Trainor’s account is a vivid example rather than a measurement of Mario’s popularity. It shows how one person connects the games to childhood, family play, colorful characters, and her children’s reactions. Nintendo’s retrospective and its creators’ later comments add design context: a clear visual identity and accessible actions can persist, while new ideas keep the experience from standing still.
That combination helps explain why Mario can feel familiar to adults and newly exciting to children at the same time. It does not establish a single reason every player returns, nor does it quantify how many people feel that connection.
