Mark Latunski was sentenced to life in prison without parole on December 15, 2022, for the first-degree murder of Kevin Bacon, a 25-year-old man he met through Grindr. The sentence followed Latunski’s September guilty plea and a judge’s October finding that the killing was premeditated.

What happened to Kevin Bacon?

Bacon lived in Swartz Creek, Michigan. His family reported him missing after he did not appear for a Christmas gathering in 2019. His body was found on December 28 at Latunski’s home in Bennington Township, three days after he was reported missing. Police said Latunski admitted killing Bacon and eating parts of his body. CBS News, reporting Associated Press coverage, described the case.

Who was Mark Latunski, and how did he meet Bacon?

Latunski was the Michigan man convicted of killing Bacon. According to police accounts reported by the Associated Press, the two men met through Grindr. That detail explains how they came into contact; one criminal case does not establish that the app caused the crime or indicate that it is generally unsafe.

How the case reached sentencing

September 2022: guilty plea

Latunski pleaded guilty to open murder. The plea did not settle the degree of murder, leaving that determination to the judge.

October 2022: the judge determines the degree

Shiawassee County Judge Matthew Stewart found the killing to be premeditated first-degree murder. As reported by CBS News’ Associated Press coverage, Stewart said, “The court finds that this is a crime of cold calculation.” He also said, “Kevin Bacon’s death was Mark Latunski’s design.” CBS News / Associated Press, October 20, 2022.

December 15, 2022: life sentence

Latunski received life in prison without the possibility of parole for first-degree murder. He also received an 11-month sentence for disinterment and mutilation of a dead body; that sentence runs concurrently with the life term. CBS Detroit / Associated Press, December 15, 2022.
