March 2025 was when Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc got its Japanese release date: September 19, 2025. The March 23 announcement also unveiled 12 character visuals. The movie did not premiere in March; that was the month the franchise confirmed when it would open in Japan.
What was announced in March 2025?
On March 23, the official Chainsaw Man site announced that Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc would open in Japan on September 19, 2025, and released 12 character visuals. It was a significant update after the franchise had announced in December 2024 that the film was coming in 2025 without giving a specific date. The earlier announcement and the March date reveal establish the distinction: March was the announcement, not the premiere.

When did the film open in other countries?
The September 19 date applied to Japan, not the whole world. The franchise’s April 2, 2025 schedule listed different theatrical openings by territory:
| Market or territory | Announced theatrical date |
|---|---|
| Japan | September 19, 2025 |
| Hong Kong | September 24, 2025 |
| Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand | September 25, 2025 |
| India, Indonesia, Philippines, South Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam | September 26, 2025 |
The official international schedule also gave later dates for other markets. Local theatrical dates can differ, so a Japanese release date should not be treated as a worldwide opening.

Is Reze Arc the first Chainsaw Man movie?
Yes. Sony describes Reze Arc as the first Chainsaw Man big-screen film and says it continues the anime series. It adapts material from Tatsuki Fujimoto’s manga, serialized by Shueisha’s Shonen Jump+. The film is directed by Tatsuya Yoshihara, written by Hiroshi Seko, and animated by MAPPA. Sony’s film page lists the premise and production credits.
What is the film about, and should you watch the anime first?
Sony’s spoiler-light synopsis introduces Denji as a Devil Hunter betrayed by the yakuza and rescued by Pochita, a chainsaw-powered devil-dog. After the two fuse, Denji becomes Chainsaw Man. The story moves into a conflict involving devils, hunters and hidden enemies when Reze enters his life. Sony presents the film as a continuation of the anime, not a standalone origin story.

- Blu-ray
If you want the story context established before the movie, watch the anime first. If you are comfortable joining a continuing story midstream, you can start with the film, but it is not presented as a complete introduction to Denji’s origins. The source manga is another route into the story; Sony identifies Fujimoto’s work as the source, but does not specify which collected volumes cover the film’s entire arc.
Where can you watch Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc?
Crunchyroll announced that streaming began on April 30, 2026, in subtitled and dubbed formats, and its catalog lists the film. Availability and language options may vary by region; check the Crunchyroll catalog for your location.

How successful was the film in Japan?
As reported by Crunchyroll, the official Chainsaw Man franchise account said the film had passed 10 billion yen in cumulative Japanese box-office gross and reached 6.55 million admissions as of December 30, 2025, after 103 days. It opened in 421 Japanese theaters, including 61 IMAX theaters. These are dated Japan-only figures, not worldwide totals. Crunchyroll’s report attributes the figures to the official franchise account.
