How big was Manjummel Boys’ success?
Ormax Media’s The Ormax Box Office Report: 2024 lists the film at ₹157 crore gross in its Malayalam top-ten chart and identifies it as the first Malayalam film to cross ₹150 crore. Other figures describe different points in the theatrical run and different reporting windows: The Indian Express reported a ₹207 crore global gross in March 2024, while The New Indian Express reported ₹226 crore globally in May 2024. Why did its story connect?
A rescue plot with a clear emotional stake
The central situation is easy to understand: a friend is trapped, and the others must decide how far they will go to save him. The danger supplies the thriller’s forward motion; the friendship makes that danger matter. Director-writer Chidambaram described friendship as the film’s core, saying the group’s bond had to be strong enough that its members would not leave their friend behind.

That straightforward emotional engine travels well across language boundaries. Chidambaram called it “a triumph against the odds” and described the film as visually told, saying language was not a barrier. An ensemble built around the friendship
The film’s group dynamic is central to its appeal, rather than a single star rescuing the story. Chidambaram explained his casting approach to Gulf News: “Casting a superstar in this group will create imbalance.” That choice kept attention on the friends as a unit and made their collective effort the dramatic focus. How did the cave setting make the survival story convincing?
The Guna Caves are a real place, but the location was unsuitable for filming. Chidambaram told The Indian Express that the production recreated the caves in a warehouse. Reporting on the production describes detailed observation and scanning, rock molds, and sound work that helped build a convincing, claustrophobic environment.
That craft served the suspense rather than merely providing spectacle. In a story about a person trapped underground, the audience needs to feel the cave’s confined space and the difficulty of reaching someone inside it. Why did it become popular in Tamil Nadu?
The film reached Tamil Nadu in its original Malayalam, with subtitles, and drew on a recognizable connection to Tamil cinema: the 1991 film Gunaa and its song “Kanmani Anbodu.” Chidambaram said the song was part of the story from early development and that its lyrics could work in the context of friendship. The Tamil Cinema Trade Guide also identified the Gunaa reference as a contributor to the film’s Tamil Nadu run. The connection offered a cultural bridge, but the available reporting does not show that the song alone drove the success.
The trade guide reported that the film collected more than ₹50 crore in Tamil Nadu and expanded from 75 screens in its first week to 225 in its second and more than 275 in its third. It describes a limited initial multiplex release followed by screen growth as audience talk spread. That sequence is consistent with word of mouth helping the run grow, although the account does not separate audience response from other release decisions. Was it part of a wider Malayalam cinema boom?
Yes. Ormax reported that Malayalam industry footfalls grew 88% in 2024 compared with 2023, linking the increase to films including Manjummel Boys and Aavesham performing well in Kerala and neighbouring states. That context helps explain how the film’s success fit into a strong year for the industry, but it does not make this one film the sole cause of the overall growth. Ormax Media’s 2024 report.
