Lorde’s Virgin album artwork shocked some fans for a reason more specific than its nudity: the public cover is a blue-toned pelvic X-ray, while reports said that at least one vinyl edition concealed a separate, more explicit photograph inside the package. Buyers discovered the image when they opened the record, creating a controversy shaped as much by physical-media surprise as by the artwork itself.
Lorde’s Virgin album artwork became a surprise for some fans because the public cover and the physical packaging presented two very different images. The cover promoted online is a blue-toned X-ray of a pelvis, complete with visible clothing hardware and an IUD. Reports from buyers and entertainment outlets said that at least one vinyl edition also contained a separate, explicit interior photograph showing Lorde’s mostly bare pelvic area through transparent clothing.
That distinction matters. The story is not simply that Lorde released an album with a nude cover. It is that some people discovered the more revealing image only after opening a physical record—turning the packaging itself into part of the album’s controversy.
The public Virgin cover is a pelvic X-ray
The widely circulated cover image is clinical rather than conventionally glamorous. It shows a pelvis in X-ray form, with a zipper, belt hardware and an intrauterine device visible in the composition. Photographer Heji Shin is associated with the image.

The visible IUD became one of the image’s most discussed details. It makes the cover feel unusually literal: instead of presenting the body as a polished portrait, it shows something beneath clothing and skin, including a private medical device that would normally remain unseen.
Apple Music’s album metadata lists Virgin as an 11-track album with a running time of about 34 minutes. Universal announced the record as Lorde’s fourth studio album, released on June 27, 2025.
What fans found inside some vinyl copies
Reports about early physical copies described a separate photograph inside the vinyl packaging. Unlike the public X-ray, the insert was explicit: it showed a mostly bare pelvic area through transparent plastic clothing.
The image was reportedly not printed as the main cover. Buyers encountered it as part of the interior packaging, which helps explain the intensity of the reaction. A person who had seen the X-ray online may have expected a provocative but relatively abstract piece of album art; opening the record revealed something much more direct.

There is an important limitation to the reporting: available evidence confirms the insert in the vinyl release reported by multiple outlets, but it does not establish that every Virgin pressing, territory or format contains exactly the same material. The safest description is therefore “at least one vinyl edition” rather than “all vinyl copies.” There is also no basis for claiming that the CD or digital editions include the explicit vinyl insert.
Because the photograph is explicit, reproducing fan-uploaded versions is unnecessary. The relevant point is the contrast between the two images and the discovery context—not the shock value of displaying the photograph again.
Why the artwork fits the album’s themes
The visual choices align with the concerns associated with Virgin: bodily experience, disclosure, femininity, gender expression and sexual autonomy. The album’s broader presentation has been described as physically direct and unusually liberated, while interview coverage has connected Lorde’s creative work on the record with femininity and gender identity.
One reasonable interpretation is that the X-ray turns “transparency” into a literal visual idea. It exposes the body beneath clothing while still keeping the image at a clinical distance. The hardware and IUD make the body feel lived-in rather than idealized.

- Experience the high-fidelity audio of vinyl
- Fully automatic belt-drive turntable operation with two speeds: 33-1/3, 45 RPM
- Anti-resonance, die-cast aluminum platter
- Redesigned tonearm base and headshell for improved tracking and reduced resonance
- Integral Dual Magnet phono cartridge with replaceable diamond stylus (ATN3600LC)
The explicit insert changes that distance. An X-ray lets the viewer look through the body in an almost medical or technical way; a photograph of transparent clothing asks the viewer to confront the body more immediately. In that reading, the packaging moves from abstract exposure to direct disclosure.
That is an interpretation, not a single officially confirmed explanation for every visual detail. Lorde has discussed the cover as deliberately intense and has spoken about the way it can unsettle viewers. Other interview and review coverage connects the album with changing ideas about the body, gender expression and self-presentation. Those comments support the thematic reading, but they do not prove that every viewer must understand the artwork in exactly one way.
Why physical media made the controversy feel different
Most digital listeners and casual observers encountered only the public X-ray cover. Physical buyers, by contrast, could receive additional printed material that was not part of the ordinary streaming or online album-art experience.
That difference is central to the story. A provocative image displayed on a website can be assessed before someone chooses to view or buy it. A surprise insert inside a sealed record creates a different kind of encounter. The buyer has already taken the object home, opened the packaging and begun exploring it before discovering the image.

It also highlights a feature of physical music that is easy to overlook: an album is not always just the audio and the front cover. LP sleeves, booklets, inserts, posters and alternate photography can create an additional layer of meaning—or controversy—that is invisible to digital listeners.
Which Virgin format should buyers expect?
Retail listings identify multiple physical formats, including a standard LP, a 180g “Bathwater” LP and an Audio CD. However, the existence of those formats does not by itself establish that they share the same inner artwork.
- Vinyl: This is the format linked in reporting to the explicit interior photograph, but buyers should verify the exact pressing and product description.
- Bathwater 180g LP: This is a named vinyl variation. Its packaging should not be assumed to match another LP edition unless the listing or a verified photograph confirms it.
- CD: A physical alternative for listeners who want a disc, but there is no evidence here that it contains the reported vinyl insert.
- Digital editions: These provide access to the music and the public-facing cover but cannot be assumed to include physical packaging materials.
If you are buying specifically to examine the artwork, look for edition-specific photographs, a detailed contents list and the seller’s territory information. Current stock, pricing, seller identity and pressing details can change, so a retailer page should be checked at the time of purchase.
Where to find the physical album
For readers looking for Lorde Virgin vinyl, retailer listings include LP formats such as the standard edition and the 180g Bathwater LP. Check the specific listing carefully: the available reporting does not prove that every pressing contains the same insert.
If you prefer a disc rather than a record, Lorde Virgin CD is a legitimate alternative. Do not buy the CD expecting the explicit insert reported from a vinyl package.
The clearest takeaway
Virgin became a packaging story as much as an album-art story. Its public cover uses a pelvic X-ray to present the body as transparent, material and difficult to idealize. Reports about at least one vinyl edition added a much more explicit photograph inside the sleeve, removing some of the distance created by the X-ray.

That combination explains why fans who opened physical copies described being shocked. The surprise came not only from the image itself, but from finding a more revealing visual after expecting the clinical cover that had already circulated online. The exact contents remain edition-dependent, so the responsible conclusion is simple: verify the pressing rather than assuming every Virgin format contains the same artwork.
