Osgood Perkins’s 2024 horror-thriller follows FBI agent Lee Harker as she pursues a serial killer through occult clues. Its dread comes from both the case itself and the film’s unsettling atmosphere, even as the mystery eventually moves toward explanations rather than staying wholly unresolved.
What is Longlegs about?
Maika Monroe plays Lee Harker, an FBI agent assigned to a serial-killer case. NEON’s official synopsis describes an investigation that uncovers occult clues and must solve them to stop a killing spree. That premise puts the film on two tracks at once: Harker works through the logic of a crime, while the clues point toward something stranger than a conventional procedural.

Perkins wrote and directed the film. The official cast listing also names Nicolas Cage, Blair Underwood, and Alicia Witt. This is a horror-thriller with crime-story machinery, not an abstract mood piece without a case to follow.
Why the film’s unease lingers
The Atlantic’s David Sims describes Longlegs as balancing atmosphere with rules: unsettling imagery establishes the mood, while the investigation continues to advance. That combination gives the dread something concrete to attach to. The FBI case offers patterns to follow; occult clues make those patterns feel ominous and unstable.

#1 Best Overall
- Longlegs [Blu-Ray]
Calling it “summer’s freakiest film” is therefore a critical impression, not a measurable title or a claim that every viewer will find it the scariest. The film’s effect depends on how much a viewer responds to isolated, disturbing imagery and supernatural suggestion alongside a developing investigation.
Does Longlegs explain its mystery?
Yes, at least more than its early atmosphere might lead some viewers to expect. Sims’s review notes that the film’s investigation advances and that it eventually explains more than it initially lets on. The shift from ominous ambiguity toward answers and third-act turns may be satisfying for viewers who want the clues to connect; it may be less effective for those who prefer horror to preserve uncertainty.
Rank #2
- Longlegs [4K UHD]
That tension is central to the experience: Longlegs uses mystery to build dread, but it does not rely on atmosphere alone. Expect a story that reveals and reinterprets parts of its case, rather than one that leaves every question open.
Who is likely to find it scary?
The film may suit viewers who like horror built from crime investigation, occult hints, and an unsettling atmosphere. Those looking for a conventional police procedural may find the supernatural elements disruptive, while viewers who want pure ambiguity may find the explanations and late turns too definite. There is no reliable universal scale for how frightening it is, so “freakiest” is best understood as a description of its mood rather than a promise about its intensity.

Where to find Longlegs on disc
NEON lists a Longlegs 4K UHD SteelBook. Shochiku documents a separate Japan-specific DVD edition, available beginning August 15, 2025, with an approximately 101-minute runtime. Its language and subtitle details apply to that Japanese edition only; check the territory and specifications of any disc before buying. NEON also provides a Watch Now route, but streaming availability varies by country and is not established here.

Shochiku’s 2025 page describes Longlegs as the number-one U.S. independent film by 2024 gross, the highest-grossing U.S. independent horror film in the preceding ten years, and NEON’s highest-grossing film in North American distribution. These are distributor-published historical claims; the page does not supply an independently checked gross total. They indicate the scale of the film’s commercial reputation, not proof that it is objectively the scariest film of the summer.
