Matthew Perry wrote that he and a former partner stopped speaking after she emailed that she was getting married and had no room in her life for friends. Later coverage identified the woman as Lizzy Caplan, but Perry did not name her in the memoir passage. Caplan’s 2022 response did not explain why contact ended: she said she had not read the book, did not remember the anecdote, and bore no ill will.

What did Matthew Perry say about the breakup?

In Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, Perry described a six-year relationship with an unnamed former partner. According to the account relayed by Vanity Fair, he said he invited her to see him perform in a London play and later received an email saying she was getting married and “had no room in her life for friends.” Perry wrote that “we’ve never spoken since,” as quoted in a later Hindustan Times report.

Those details are Perry’s recollection, reported from his memoir; they are not an independently verified account of the private exchange. The memoir passage did not name Caplan. Vanity Fair and later coverage connected it to her using contextual clues, so it is more accurate to call her the reported former partner than to say Perry identified her by name.

What did Lizzy Caplan say when asked?

In a November 16, 2022, Vanity Fair interview, the interviewer described the memoir anecdote and asked Caplan about it. Caplan said she had not seen the book and did not remember the story. She added, “I have no ill will. I hope the book is really successful.” Asked more generally whether dating Perry shaped her view of celebrity fame, she said, “I was never interested in that life.”

That was a limited response, not an explanation of her reasons for ending contact. The interview does not record Caplan confirming Perry’s account or saying that she refused to speak with him.

When was their last reported contact?

Later reports place the relationship between 2006 and 2012 and describe the London-play invitation and subsequent email as the end of their contact. Perry’s account therefore concerns a break in communication years before his death, not a new refusal shortly beforehand. The cited reporting does not establish whether the two had any private contact after the email.

What is known—and what remains inference?

  • Reported from Perry’s memoir: He said a former partner told him she was getting married and had no room for friends, and that they did not speak afterward.
  • Reported identification: Vanity Fair and subsequent coverage connected the unnamed woman to Caplan; the memoir passage itself did not name her.
  • Caplan’s public response: She said she had not read the book, did not remember the anecdote, and had no ill will.
  • Not established: Her motive, whether she would describe the exchange differently, or whether any later private contact occurred.

Matthew Perry died in October 2023 at age 54, according to the Associated Press. That later event does not change the timing or evidentiary limits of the memoir account.
