Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “break character” moment came during the Saturday Night Live cold open on January 25, 2025—not his separate 2016 episode as host. Appearing as Alexander Hamilton, Miranda began a rap before James Austin Johnson’s Donald Trump interrupted him and joked that he would not get to finish it. Miranda smiled while holding his place in the scene, a reaction coverage described as breaking character.

This was not Miranda’s October 2016 episode as SNL host. In the 2025 cold open, he appeared as a guest in the sketch; Johnson played Trump. Mediaite’s coverage also describes the interruption and Miranda’s reaction.
What did Trump say to Hamilton?
The sketch staged a scene around the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Miranda began rapping about the republic and the absence of a king. Johnson’s Trump entered, cut him off, and addressed him directly, joking that Miranda had written a rap but would not get to perform it. The premise turned Hamilton’s musical style against the character: the founding-era figure was ready to rap, only to be denied his verse.

People/Yahoo reported Johnson’s character saying, “He even wrote a whole rap and he doesn’t get to do it,” followed by a joke about Miranda being “in sniffing distance of an EGOT” and having to stand there until Trump was done. The character then called him “Linny” repeatedly. These lines are attributed to the report, rather than presented here as an official transcript.
Did Miranda actually break character?
People/Yahoo describes Miranda smiling slightly while remaining frozen in the scene; Mediaite characterizes the moment as him breaking character by cracking up. The visible smile is the concrete reaction reported by the former account. “Breaking character” is a description of that reaction, not evidence of what Miranda was thinking.

Why was Miranda playing Hamilton?
Miranda created and starred in Hamilton, the musical inspired by Ron Chernow’s biography of Alexander Hamilton. That connection makes the interruption joke legible: the actor and songwriter was onstage as the historical figure whose story made him famous, poised to rap before the Trump character took over. People/Yahoo reports that the musical won 11 Tony Awards, a Grammy, and a Pulitzer Prize; those honors belong to the musical, not to Miranda individually.
