Showrunner Leslye Headland said the visual vulnerability changes his dynamic with Osha: he is still dangerous, but he does not approach her as an intimidating “alpha male.”
What happens in the scene
In “Teach / Corrupt,” Osha follows the Stranger to a pool, carrying his lightsaber in case she needs to defend herself. He undresses and swims, then speaks with her while exposed. The moment places Osha in a position of power: she has the weapon, while he is physically unprotected.

The scene appears in season 1, episode 6. The official StarWars.com episode guide describes two strangers confronting questions of identity and destiny on a distant island world.
Headland’s reason for showing the Stranger exposed
Headland explained that the scene needed to make the Stranger’s vulnerability visible after episode 5. As quoted by James Whitbrook in Gizmodo/io9’s July 5, 2024 article, she said: “The only way to do that is to show him in such a wildly vulnerable position, and it has to be visual.”
#1 Best Overall
She also pointed to the imbalance in the scene: “I can’t think of something more vulnerable than someone holding a lightsaber on someone who’s that exposed. I just don’t.” Osha’s weapon gives that vulnerability a concrete form; the scene is not simply a change of costume or setting.
How the moment changes his relationship with Osha
For Headland, the Stranger could not carry the same threatening manner into this encounter that he had shown in the previous episode. “The dynamics had to be what they are after what he did in [Episode] 5,” she said. “He cannot seem like an alpha male-y, intimidating—we know he’s capable of that from [the last episode]—but that cannot be his dynamic with [Osha].”
Rank #2
Headland contrasted his openness with Osha against his conduct toward Mae: he had never let Mae see his face, while Osha sees him naked. That contrast makes the scene part of the show’s characterization of the Stranger and his shifting relationships, rather than a general statement that he has become harmless. Headland summed up the design choice by saying, “The character design was very, very intentional.”
