They said the images were edited further and appeared briefly as interstitials; the controversy concerned those graphics, not an AI-generated film. What AI was used for in Late Night With the Devil
Co-directors Cameron and Colin Cairnes said they experimented with AI to create three still images. They said the graphics team and production-design team worked on the images, which were edited further and used as very brief interstitials. Their statement was reported by VentureBeat on March 21, 2024.

The directors’ account describes a limited use of AI-generated imagery. It does not mean the film as a whole was made with AI. Their statement is an explanation from the filmmakers, rather than an independent audit of the production process.
Which images prompted the backlash?
As the film approached its broad U.S. theatrical release on March 22, 2024, online discussion focused on retro television graphics. Contemporary coverage described viewers identifying a skeleton image and an owl interstitial as apparent AI-generated art. Some criticized their inclusion and called for the images to be replaced with human-made artwork.

Why did some viewers call for a boycott?
For critics, the dispute was about using generative imagery in a film’s graphics and the place of human artists in that work. Some viewers urged a boycott; others argued against boycotting an independent film, pointing to the contributions of its wider cast and crew. These were competing responses in online discussion, not evidence of a single audience consensus.
Contemporaneous reporting records calls for a boycott and arguments against one, but does not quantify participation or show which position was more widely held. It also does not establish whether the images or film cut were changed after the controversy.
