Kunal Nayyar said he often broke character early in The Big Bang Theory, sometimes laughing at his own jokes and frustrating people on set. One scene with Simon Helberg helps explain why: Helberg’s performance was so funny to Nayyar that keeping a straight face became difficult. Nayyar’s “pissed everyone off” description is a self-deprecating recollection—not evidence of a lasting feud.
What did Kunal Nayyar mean by “breaking”?
In television, an actor “breaks” when they lose composure in a scene—often by laughing when they are meant to stay in character. On The Official Big Bang Theory Podcast, Nayyar recalled that he did it frequently at the start of the sitcom’s run. CinemaBlend quoted him saying, “I was the worst in the beginning on the show. I broke all the time. It really pissed everyone off, but I couldn’t help it. I don’t know why. I would also break a lot of my own jokes, which is funny.”
That is Nayyar’s own colorful account of how his laughter affected the set. The cited coverage does not establish how many takes were interrupted, whether production was delayed, or how individual castmates reacted. “All the time” should be read as his informal recollection, not a measured count.
Why was the “Grasshopper Experiment” scene so funny to him?
The anecdote came up while the podcast discussed Season 1, Episode 8, “The Grasshopper Experiment.” In a phone-call scene, Howard, played by Helberg, uses a fake accent while making a call for Raj. Nayyar singled out the way Helberg delivered even a simple line: “Friday works for me.”
#1 Best Overall
As quoted by CinemaBlend, Nayyar praised Helberg’s performance: “The beauty of Simon as an actor and a performer is even a simple line like ‘Friday works for me.’ Just the cadence in which [he said] ‘Friday works for me!’ Like, it was so beautifully musical and just ridiculous. He’s a genius. It was very hard for me to keep a straight face.”
Nayyar also recalled that the camera likely cut away after he started laughing and returned to him trying not to laugh aloud. He described the moment this way: “They probably cut away because I started laughing, and then they cut back, and I look a little like I’ve just been trying to, you know, not laugh out loud, basically.”

Was there a feud between Nayyar and his costars?
The anecdote does not establish one. Nayyar’s comments describe a habit that frustrated people on set, but his account of Helberg is affectionate: he called him a “genius” and emphasized how much he enjoyed their scenes. He also said their offstage banter carried over into their work, making scenes with Helberg feel less like work.
Slashfilm’s account of the actors’ comments offers similar context. Helberg described their scene-partner chemistry as a natural rhythm, saying, “There’s a dance that has to happen with scene partners, and it was always easy with Kunal because you just get the rhythm or you don’t.” He also compared their relationship to that of brothers who could annoy one another while caring about each other. Read alongside Nayyar’s recollection, the “pissed everyone off” line sounds like comic self-criticism about breaking, not proof of serious conflict.

What the anecdote does—and does not—tell us
- It does tell us Nayyar remembered laughing in scenes frequently early in the show and sometimes breaking at his own jokes.
- It points to a specific trigger: Helberg’s comic timing and delivery, especially in the fake-accent phone-call scene.
- It does not quantify broken takes, delays, or the reactions of particular castmates.
- It does not show lasting resentment between Nayyar and Helberg; the reported comments about their partnership are warm.
