The allegation was disputed, and the contemporaneous reports do not establish whether the films shared a story, whether rights had been acquired, or how the police matter ended.
What Roy alleged about the two films
Roy, who worked for the Bengali daily Sangbad Pratidin, commented on the upcoming film Hoichoi Unlimited after its teaser drew claims of similarities to the Pakistani film Jawaani Phir Nahi Ani. In a tweet reproduced by The Quint, Roy wrote: “Though there’s nothing wrong in remakes, here’s hoping the makers of #HoichoiUnlimited have taken official rights from @aryfilmsary & #SixSigmaPlus, the producers of the film.”
His wording raised a question about possible copying and remake rights; it was not proof that copying had occurred or that the makers lacked permission.
Why Kolkata Police questioned him
Scroll.in reported that Roy was questioned on Friday, September 14, 2018, following an FIR filed the previous day. The report said a police notice cited Sections 43 and 66 of the Information Technology Act and Section 505 of the Indian Penal Code. Those are the provisions the 2018 report said appeared in the notice, not an assessment of their current legal application.

Roy said in a Facebook post that police told him Dev Entertainment Ventures, which bankrolled Hoichoi Unlimited, had lodged the complaint. Scroll.in also reported that a company spokesperson, when contacted, denied knowledge of the incident. The available contemporaneous account therefore does not independently establish who filed the FIR.
What the film’s makers said
Contemporary coverage reported that Dev denied the copying rumours. The Times of India described viewers’ claims of similarities after the teaser. Another report quoted Dev explaining that a promotional video was intended to remind people not to believe everything they see on social media. These reported responses neither settle whether the films were alike nor establish the rights position.

- Established in the contemporaneous reports: Roy’s allegation circulated, and Kolkata Police questioned him on September 14, 2018, in connection with an FIR concerning his tweets.
- Disputed or unverified: whether Hoichoi Unlimited copied Jawaani Phir Nahi Ani, whether official remake rights were obtained, and who filed the FIR.
- Not documented in the available reports: the final police or court disposition of the matter.
Roy was quoted as saying, “When the film releases on October 12, it will be crystal clear if the film has been copied.” That was his view at the time, as reported by Scroll.in and The Quint; it is not a later finding about the films or the case.
