A similar pattern was reported at the German state visit in December 2025, which is easy to confuse with it. The reports describe what she did, but they do not include an explanation from Catherine herself, and no published rule requires a particular number of curtsies at either event.

Garter Day is the annual ceremony of the Order of the Garter, held at Windsor Castle, and it includes a procession in which the sovereign and senior royals travel past the assembled guests. According to a PEOPLE report republished by AOL, Catherine greeted the King and Queen as they passed during the procession, then made a second curtsy as their carriage left. The December 2025 German state visit
A second report, dated 3 December 2025, covers the welcome ceremony for the German state visit. It describes Catherine making eye contact with King Charles and curtsying to him, then repeating the gesture when Queen Camilla turned toward her. According to the same report, Camilla blew Catherine a kiss, and Catherine replied with a smile and a word of greeting. The outlet also suggested this was probably the first time Catherine had seen the couple that day, which it used to explain why the two gestures were separate. Because this earlier report used the same “double curtsy” framing, a clip or article that mentions a double curtsy may refer to either event. The dates and settings below separate them.

The Royal Family’s published etiquette guidance on its official website describes traditional greetings. As quoted by PEOPLE in its December 2025 report, it states:

The guidance is useful for understanding the conventions behind a curtsy, but it has limits:
- It describes the form of a traditional greeting. It does not set a count of greetings for a procession, a ceremony or a carriage departure.
- It presents handshakes as an accepted alternative, so a curtsy is a customary choice rather than an obligation.
- It is general guidance, not a comment on Catherine’s actions at either event.
Why the reports read it as respect for both monarchs
The coverage of both events points the same way. In each case, the reports describe Catherine acknowledging King Charles and Queen Camilla as separate people, which is why the gestures are described as two. The reports suggest that the repeated curtsy reflects respect for both monarchs, and the December 2025 outlet ties this to the timing of when she last saw them. These are readings of the moment, not confirmed motives.
