Karamo Brown faced criticism in August 2019 after he called Sean Spicer “a good guy” and “Really sweet guy” shortly after they were paired on Dancing with the Stars. Brown said he hoped conversation across political differences could help people learn from one another. Critics argued that his praise minimized the harms they associated with the Trump administration Spicer had served.
What Karamo Brown said about Sean Spicer
In August 2019, ABC announced that Spicer, Donald Trump’s former White House press secretary, would compete on Dancing with the Stars. Brown, a Queer Eye cast member also appearing on the show, told The Independent he was excited to meet Spicer and believed people who seemed politically opposed could talk, meet in the middle and help each other grow.
Brown said they had been chatting and described Spicer as “a good guy” and “Really sweet guy.” It was that warm personal assessment, made in the context of their new television partnership, that became the focus of the backlash.
Why some viewers objected
Critics said Brown’s description treated the encounter as a matter of personal chemistry while overlooking the political consequences they associated with Spicer’s service in the Trump administration. The Guardian’s reporting cited critics’ concerns about the administration’s support for so-called bathroom bills and its ban on transgender people serving in the military. These were policies and positions of the administration; the reporting does not establish that Spicer personally enacted them.

Author Roxane Gay was among the prominent critics. As reported by The Independent, she wrote, “Get a f***ing grip,” and argued, “There is no friendship with people who enable fascism.” Her response captured the central disagreement: Brown emphasized the possibility of dialogue and personal connection, while critics saw friendly praise as overlooking the effects of the political administration Spicer represented.
How the controversy unfolded online
The dispute played out on Twitter. Brown replied to critics in posts that were later deleted, and he subsequently deleted his account. His Queer Eye castmate Bobby Berk briefly expressed sympathy for Brown while also criticizing ABC for casting Spicer and giving him a platform, according to The Guardian and The Independent.

The backlash was not evidence that every Queer Eye fan shared one view. Contemporary coverage describes public criticism and specific responses, not a measured survey of the show’s audience.
What Brown said after leaving Dancing with the Stars
In October 2019, after his elimination from the competition, Brown defended the friendship in an interview reported by TIME. He said he and Spicer had formed a bond despite their political disagreement, and described trying to plant seeds through conversation. Brown also made clear he remained opposed to Trump: “I still want Trump out of office, but you know.”

Brown framed his approach as kindness toward someone with a different political view. He told reporters, “I started this show with people telling me, ‘You’re horrible, you’re crazy, you’re stupid.’ Because I showed someone who has a different political view than mine kindness.” TIME also reported Brown’s account that he had received death threats along with his children; that was his reported claim, not an independently verified finding in the article.

The conflict was not simply about whether people with opposing politics should speak to one another. Brown described conversation as a way to build understanding and influence someone over time. Critics focused instead on the meaning and impact of publicly calling a former Trump administration official a “good guy,” particularly when they believed the administration’s record harmed LGBTQ people and other minorities.

ABC’s casting decision formed a third part of the dispute: Berk criticized the network for giving Spicer a prominent entertainment platform. The episode therefore combined a debate about personal friendship, political accountability and the choices television networks make when selecting public figures for entertainment programs.
