In Swaroop’s account, the clearest example is Ashad Ka Ek Din, Kaul’s 1971 adaptation of Mohan Rakesh’s play: a film shaped by painterly compositions, an unconventional sound process and a sensitive reworking of literary material. Swaroop’s tribute appeared on Scroll on February 16, 2021, as the film marked 50 years.
What Swaroop meant by “visionary”
The phrase is Swaroop’s critical judgment, not a claim of universal consensus. He ties it to two qualities: Kaul’s openness to new ideas and his ability to make films with the resources available instead of waiting for ideal conditions. In Ashad Ka Ek Din, Swaroop sees those qualities in the film’s visual design, its treatment of time and its production choices.
That focus makes the tribute more than an expression of admiration. It offers a way to understand Kaul’s experimentation through the practical decisions and artistic relationships visible in one film.
How Ashad Ka Ek Din turns a play into cinema
A triangle shaped by ambition and desire
Kaul’s second feature adapts Mohan Rakesh’s play. Its central figure, the poet-playwright Kalidas, is honored by a king and offered a journey to Ujjayini. Mallika, played by Rekha Sabnis, urges him to accept even as she feels the pain of his departure. Om Shivpuri plays Vilom, Kalidas’s rival for Mallika.

Swaroop reads this triangle as a story of artistic rivalry as well as desire. The conflict is not simply about which man Mallika chooses: it also concerns the pressures surrounding an artist’s recognition and the personal cost of pursuing it.
Mallika as more than an artist’s muse
Swaroop describes the film’s imagery as painterly, with Ajanta murals and frescoes informing its visual treatment. He draws attention to its compositions, close-ups and mid-shots, and reads Mallika as a powerful presence in the film. At the same time, he notes the risk that her story could be reduced to the familiar role of the artist’s muse. That tension matters: Mallika has her own force in the drama, even as the film places her within Kalidas’s artistic and personal story.

Production constraints that became part of the film’s method
Swaroop reports that the film was shot in a rain-swept house in Kasauli, in the Himalayan foothills. Sync sound was expensive, so Kaul pre-recorded dialogue and had the actors lip-sync to it. Rather than treating these circumstances only as compromises, Swaroop connects the sound approach and the Himalayan outdoors to the film’s overall effect.
This is one reason his description of Kaul as resourceful is specific rather than abstract. The production account shows an artist working around limitations while making choices that shaped how the finished film feels.

Swaroop says Robert Bresson was the filmmaker Kaul most sought to emulate. He points to affinities in their literary retellings and their interest in time, while naming artist Akbar Padamsee as a major influence on Kaul.
Swaroop also discusses Ritwik Ghatak’s role at the Film and Television Institute of India in the context of Kaul’s generation, but explicitly says Ghatak did not have a direct bearing on Kaul or Kumar Shahani. These distinctions matter: the tribute situates Kaul among artistic currents without turning every figure it mentions into a direct influence.

Swaroop identifies Uski Roti (1969) as Kaul’s debut and names Duvidha, Dhrupad, Mati Manas, Siddheshwari and Ashad Ka Ek Din among the works that show his range. Kaul moved between fiction and documentary, transforming literary or folk sources into cinematic experiences rather than simply transferring them to the screen.
Swaroop’s connection to Mati Manas was personal as well as critical: he recounts assisting with research for the 1985 terracotta documentary, travelling and recording potters’ stories. That recollection offers a glimpse of the research behind a film concerned with craft and the people who sustain it.

Institutional recognition provides a separate perspective. In a 2012 memorial announcement, Films Division said it had commissioned nine documentaries from Kaul, including Siddheshwari and Dhrupad, and described his work as formally experimental and ahead of its time. The announcement is an institutional account; Swaroop’s tribute remains a filmmaker’s personal appreciation.
Why the tribute still offers a useful way into Kaul’s work
Swaroop’s case for Kaul’s importance rests on how the films work: they draw on literature and other art forms while exploring what cinema can do with composition, duration, sound and limited means. Ashad Ka Ek Din is his central example, but the career he sketches moves across fiction and documentary, from Uski Roti to films such as Mati Manas and Siddheshwari.
The tribute’s 50-year framing belongs to its 2021 publication: it identifies Ashad Ka Ek Din as a 1971 film turning 50 that year. Its enduring value lies less in the anniversary than in the details Swaroop uses to explain his judgment—an artist who adapted, experimented and found cinematic form under real constraints.
