The Saturday Night Live parody of Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies” nearly stalled because Beyoncé was initially hesitant about the idea, according to Justin Timberlake’s later recollection. Her own account adds a separate twist: she said his bodysuit-clad visit to her dressing room was a surprise, and that rehearsals were difficult because she kept laughing.
What was the ‘Single Ladies’ sketch?
In November 2008, Saturday Night Live staged a parody of Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies” video. Timberlake joined SNL cast members Andy Samberg and Bobby Moynihan as would-be male backup dancers who had not made the cut. Contemporary coverage the following day noted Timberlake’s dancing in the sketch (ExtraTV, November 16, 2008).
The premise also supplied its own punchline. Speaking to CBS News anchor Katie Couric about the sketch, Timberlake said: “Put a grown man in a leotard and that’s just already funny.” (CBS News, January 28, 2009)
Why did the sketch almost not happen?
In a later account discussed in a 2025 Yahoo Entertainment report about Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years of SNL Music, Timberlake said Samberg contacted him with an idea from Moynihan: the three men would play backup dancers rejected by Beyoncé. The report says Beyoncé was initially hesitant about the pitch, as Timberlake later recalled. That is his account of her initial response; it does not independently establish her private reasons for hesitating (Yahoo Entertainment, 2025).

What Beyoncé said about the rehearsal
Beyoncé gave a firsthand account in a 2009 interview. She said Timberlake unexpectedly appeared in her dressing room wearing his bodysuit; the visit had not been planned. She also said she struggled to keep a straight face during rehearsal and asked to be placed ahead of the men so she would not have to watch what they were doing (CNN transcript, November 26, 2009).
Her comments describe the surprise visit and the difficulty of rehearsing without laughing. They should be kept distinct from Timberlake’s later recollection that she was initially hesitant about the pitch: the two accounts concern different moments in how the sketch came together.
