Spoilers for *Squid Game* Season 3. Jun-hee (Player 222), played by Jo Yu-ri, dies during the Jump Rope game after an ankle injury leaves her unable to cross. She steps off the platform when Gi-hun considers returning for her, believing his attempt could put him and her baby in even greater danger. That choice makes her death a powerful candidate for one of the season’s saddest moments, though “saddest” is a matter of personal judgment, not an established ranking.
How Jun-hee dies in Season 3
Jun-hee’s death follows a series of events that leave her with little physical ability to protect herself. She gives birth during Hide and Seek, then falls down the stairs in the chaos and seriously injures her ankle. In the next game, Jump Rope, she cannot safely make the crossing.
She asks Gi-hun to carry her newborn across the dangerous walkway. He gets the baby to the other side, but then considers going back for Jun-hee. She judges that there is not enough time: if Gi-hun is caught on the wrong side, both he and Jun-hee could be eliminated, leaving the baby exposed to the other players. Jun-hee steps off the platform and falls to her death.
Her baby remains in the competition under Player 222 and ultimately wins, carrying Jun-hee’s number forward.

Why the scene feels so devastating
She is physically unable to save herself
Jun-hee has just given birth and is dealing with a serious ankle injury. The scene does not present her death as the result of a fair contest between equally capable players: her body cannot manage the crossing, and the game gives her almost no time to find another way.
She chooses to give up her chance of rescue
Gi-hun’s instinct is to return for her, but Jun-hee sees the risk differently. She believes that his attempt could cost him his life and endanger the baby as well. Her final act is therefore both a sacrifice and a decision made under extreme pressure—not a simple surrender to the game.

The baby’s survival gives the choice consequences
Jun-hee’s decision is tied to the infant’s immediate chance of survival. Gi-hun has already carried the baby across, and Jun-hee wants to prevent a rescue attempt from putting that fragile passage at risk. The child later winning the competition makes the choice echo beyond the moment itself.
What Jo Yu-ri and Hwang Dong-hyuk say the moment means
Jo Yu-ri has described Jun-hee through the strength of maternal love. Speaking to Netflix Tudum, she said: “I hope that when viewers see Jun-hee that they realize that a mother’s love is so strong and powerful and indestructible.” That is the actor’s interpretation of the character’s final choice, rather than a demand that every viewer respond to it in the same way.

Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk connects the baby to the story’s larger question of whether humanity has a future worth protecting. He told Tudum: “In the film, the child symbolizes the future of humanity,” and said he wanted to explore “humanity’s last hope through Jun-hee’s baby and Gi-hun, who tries to protect the baby at all costs.” In a later retrospective, he described Season 3 as shining a light on whether people still have hope and the willingness to preserve it.
Is Jun-hee’s death the saddest in *Squid Game*?
It is reasonable to call it one of the season’s saddest deaths: Jun-hee is vulnerable, her final choice protects her child and Gi-hun, and the baby’s survival gives her sacrifice lasting weight. Lee Jung-jae also described the death as “heartbreaking,” as reported by the Los Angeles Times.

But there is no established quantitative ranking that proves it is the single saddest death in the series. Viewers may weigh other losses differently, depending on the relationships involved, how much choice a character had, and what their death changes for those left behind. Jun-hee’s scene earns its place in that discussion without requiring a universal verdict.

Hide and Seek sets the immediate context for Jun-hee’s childbirth and injury. Netflix’s episode feature describes it as a fatal game of tag in which players are divided into hiders and seekers, and quotes Hwang explaining that the setup was designed to create moral dilemmas. The game’s chaos leads into Jun-hee’s injury, but her later death occurs in Jump Rope.
