Ghostlight is worth watching for the way it lets humor and ordinary companionship share space with grief. Kelly O’Sullivan and Alex Thompson’s 2024 comedy-drama follows a construction worker who joins a neighborhood production of Romeo and Juliet; the rehearsals gradually give his strained family a way to approach a loss they have not been able to face together. The film keeps that loss unnamed at first, allowing its emotional story to unfold on its own terms.
What is Ghostlight about?
Dan (Keith Kupferer), a construction worker, is drifting from his wife, Sharon (Tara Mallen), and teenage daughter, Daisy (Katherine Mallen Kupferer). He becomes involved with a local community theater staging Romeo and Juliet, where he finds a place to participate even as communication at home remains difficult. As the play’s conflicts echo the family’s circumstances, the theater becomes a setting in which they can begin to face their pain.
The parallel is emotional rather than exact: the film does not simply map Shakespeare’s plot onto Dan’s family. Its official synopsis describes a worker who unexpectedly joins a local production and finds that the drama onstage starts to mirror his own life. The official film site and IFC Center’s listing offer the spoiler-light setup.
How does the film balance humor and grief?
Ghostlight gives its feelings room to emerge gradually. Rehearsal mishaps, amateur stagecraft, and the awkward rhythms of a group of nonprofessional performers bring levity without making light of the family’s pain. Dan can first take part in a shared activity; speaking openly with his family is harder. That difference gives the theater scenes a purpose beyond providing comic relief.

The humor is affectionate and rooted in the troupe’s everyday life, while grief remains the film’s serious undercurrent. Sundance’s opening-night coverage emphasizes the arts and community as sources of connection, and The Guardian’s Sundance review likewise sees the rehearsal process as a route into the family’s grief. The result is not a comedy that periodically pauses for sorrow; the lighter moments are part of how the characters share space with it.
Do the performances make the family feel convincing?
Kupferer, Tara Mallen, and Katherine Mallen Kupferer play Dan, Sharon, and Daisy; they are a real-life family. That production fact adds an unusual dimension to the casting, but it should not be mistaken for evidence that the performances are autobiographical. Dolly De Leon plays Rita, an actor in the troupe.

The film’s intimacy depends on small changes in how the family members relate, as much as on its larger emotional turns. The Los Angeles Times review highlights the performances and the film’s intimate quality, while Filmmaker Magazine’s interview discusses the family casting and the filmmakers’ account of the production.
Does Ghostlight reveal what happens in Romeo and Juliet?
The film uses Shakespeare’s play as a thematic mirror, so familiarity with its tragic story helps explain the parallels. But Ghostlight is not a retelling of the play, and its family story is not an exact duplicate of the characters’ experience onstage. Viewers who know the play will recognize the echoes; those who do not can still follow the drama within the theater and the family.

Does the resolution feel earned?
The film’s turn toward healing will work better for some viewers than others. Its emphasis on renewed connection is sincere and soothing, but the movement toward resolution can feel too tidy if you want grief to remain unresolved or less readily transformed. The Washington Post review articulates that tension, while other coverage emphasizes the intimacy and emotional force of the performances. The film’s final effect rests on whether its hope feels like a credible opening for the family or a neater answer than the story has earned.
