Joy Behar told former New Jersey governor Chris Christie to “shut up” on The View after he said he was still undecided about voting for Kamala Harris. Christie did rule out voting for Donald Trump, but he did not commit to Harris in that exchange—so “refusing to endorse Harris” overstates what was said.
What Christie said—and how Behar responded
On September 11, 2024, Christie appeared on The View to discuss the previous night’s presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. Co-host Sunny Hostin asked, “You think you’re going to vote for her now?” Christie answered, “I’m still an undecided voter.” Behar interjected, “Oh shut up,” and “stop it,” then booed him, according to Fox News’ account of the exchange.
Christie then clarified what he would say: “I know you all want me to make some sort of big announcement but what I will say to you is Donald Trump is not who I’m voting for.” The distinction matters: he expressly ruled out Trump, while describing himself as undecided rather than saying he would vote for Harris.
Why Harris and the debate came up
The conversation followed the Harris–Trump debate. Fox News reported that Christie said Harris had won the debate and could persuade undecided voters. He also argued that she should acknowledge mistakes by the Biden administration, including the Afghanistan withdrawal, and address changes in her positions as a way to bring people together. Those were Christie’s assessments of what Harris should do, not independent findings about the debate or her campaign.

Was Christie refusing to endorse Harris?
Not in the formal sense established by this exchange. Hostin asked whether Christie thought he would vote for Harris; Christie said he was undecided and did not announce a vote for her. He separately stated that Trump was not the person he would vote for. A voting intention and a formal endorsement are different things, and the exchange supports the former distinction—not a broader claim that Christie made or withheld a formal endorsement.
A brief earlier exchange
Fox News also recalled a July The View segment in which the hosts pressed Christie about not endorsing Joe Biden while Biden was still in the race. Behar said, “But you have to vote!” Christie replied, “No, I’m gonna vote down ticket. I don’t have to vote [for president], no!” That earlier exchange provides context for the September discussion, but it does not establish every detail of the July segment.
