Joost Klein was disqualified from the Eurovision 2024 Grand Final after a female production-team member complained about an incident following his second-semifinal performance. The Swedish criminal investigation was later closed because prosecutors said they could not prove the act could cause serious fear or that Klein intended that. The closure did not reverse the European Broadcasting Union’s separate decision under Eurovision rules.
What happened before the Eurovision final?
After Klein performed in the second semifinal on 9 May 2024, a production-team member filed a complaint concerning an incident. The available accounts do not establish a complete, independently verified reconstruction of what happened backstage.
On 11 May, the day of the Grand Final, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), which organizes Eurovision, announced that Klein would not compete. It said the decision followed the complaint and a Swedish police investigation, and that it would not be appropriate for him to continue while legal proceedings were under way. What did AVROTROS say happened?
Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS said Klein reacted to being filmed after he had indicated he did not want to be filmed. It described his movement as threatening, but said he did not touch the camera or its operator. AVROTROS called the disqualification disproportionate. These are the broadcaster’s account and position, not findings established by the later criminal investigation. The Associated Press reported the competing accounts.

Why was the Swedish investigation closed?
On 12 August 2024, senior prosecutor Fredrik Jönsson announced that the investigation was closed. He said the event happened quickly and witnesses perceived it differently. According to the prosecutor, the evidence did not prove that Klein’s act was capable of causing serious fear or that he intended to cause it. Swedish public broadcaster SVT reported his explanation and the closure: SVT Nyheter.
The prosecutor’s decision was to close the criminal inquiry; the cited accounts describe no trial or court judgment finding Klein guilty or innocent. AVROTROS said it had learned the case was suspended because there was no evidence of criminal conduct. Its statement is available here.

Why did the EBU keep the disqualification in place?
The criminal inquiry and the EBU’s contest process addressed different questions. Prosecutors considered whether criminal conduct could be proved. The EBU said its internal process considered whether conduct breached Eurovision rules and procedures. After the investigation closed, the EBU stood by its disqualification on that separate basis. AVROTROS continued to describe the exclusion as unnecessary and disproportionate and sought discussions with the EBU about the case and broader backstage issues. The broadcaster outlined its objections in a June update.

Was the incident about another contestant?
No. The EBU clarified that the incident did not involve another performer or delegation member, according to the Associated Press report. The AP report also covered that clarification.
