Jonathan Kent was recast because Jordan Elsass did not return for Superman & Lois season 3. Warner Bros. Television said Elsass was leaving “due to personal reasons” and that the role would be recast. Michael Bishop took over as Jonathan.
Why did Jordan Elsass leave Superman & Lois?
Warner Bros. Television said Elsass notified the studio that he would not return for season 3 “due to personal reasons.” The studio did not give a more specific public explanation. Its statement, reproduced by DC Comics News, also confirmed that the part would be recast.
TVLine reported remarks Elsass made in a Cameo video, including: “Mental health is definitely 100 percent priority.” He also spoke about needing time to himself. These comments offer personal context, but they were not a fuller studio explanation or a formal interview. They do not establish a diagnosis or show that mental health was the complete official reason for his departure. TVLine’s report is the source for the excerpt.
Who plays Jonathan Kent in season 3?
Michael Bishop replaced Elsass as Jonathan Kent. TVLine reported Bishop’s casting on September 7, 2022. Elsass had played Jonathan in the first two seasons; Bishop joined the cast for the third.

How did the show approach the recast?
In a DC interview published March 13, 2023, co-showrunner Brent Fletcher said Bishop auditioned and impressed the production. Fletcher described Jonathan as a teenager who was still growing and changing, and said the show gave Bishop room to shape his version of the character: “He knows who the character is, but we allowed him the room to put his own stamp on it.” Read the interview at DC.
Fletcher’s comments explain the production’s creative approach to Bishop’s portrayal; they do not explain Elsass’s departure. The available public statements do not establish a more detailed confirmed reason for the recast.
