Jonathan Bailey’s “big wheat penis” joke was about his unfinished Scarecrow look in Wicked: For Good—before the character’s straw-like hair was added. He said the transformation involved extensive prosthetics and a cooling setup he described as “plumbing under the skin.”
What did Jonathan Bailey mean by “big wheat penis”?
Bailey was describing the bare prosthetic silhouette he saw before the Scarecrow’s straw hair completed the look. In an interview with Esquire published November 21, 2025, he said, as quoted by Elite Daily: “There were loads of makeup tests. But it was all real. There was a lot of plumbing under the skin to try and keep me cool. Without the straw hair, I just looked like a big wheat penis.”

The joke was about the in-progress Scarecrow design in Wicked: For Good, not Bailey’s Fiyero appearance in the first Wicked film. With the hair in place, the wheat-like shape became part of the finished character rather than the exposed silhouette he was teasing.
How the Scarecrow prosthetics were built
Hair and makeup designer Frances Hannon described a layered design rather than a single mask. The face used six prosthetic pieces, with additional hand prosthetics fashioned into gloves. Small hairs were sewn into the facial pieces and flocked to give them a burlap-like surface, according to Allure.

The straw-like headpiece
The wig was also constructed as part of the character’s prosthetic design. Hannon said prosthetic sheets of wheat, barley, and oats were 3D-printed and incorporated into it. The materials and texture helped make the completed Scarecrow read as a figure assembled from field materials, not simply a performer wearing a conventional wig.
Keeping Bailey recognizable
The design had to transform Bailey without hiding his face shape. Hannon said prosthetics artist Mark Coulier shaved down the inside of the headpiece after an initial version obscured too much of Bailey’s features. Hannon had described this adjustment in an earlier 2024 interview transcript; the relevant point is that the headpiece was altered to preserve Bailey’s recognizability.

Why audiences saw the full look late
Hannon said the filmmakers intentionally kept the Scarecrow’s appearance partly hidden until a late reveal. That choice made the transformation a storytelling moment, but it also meant viewers might not see every detail of the prosthetic work for long. Hannon summed up the production’s design approach this way: “Nothing was by default. Everything was [by] design.”

Bailey’s description of “plumbing under the skin” indicates that the costume or prosthetic setup included a cooling arrangement, but the available accounts do not specify how it worked. They do not establish its mechanics, how long Bailey wore it, or how long application took. The quote supports the purpose he gave for it—trying to keep cool—not a more detailed technical explanation.
